Suppose a person loses ten kilograms due to dieting and/or exercise.

How much is lost via respiration ? How much via other mechanisms ?

It is my guess that respiration & urination are the major (perhaps the only) mechanisms for weight loss.

    yes, but in short terms.
Athletes get in their competeing categories by dehydration but it is bad for health and has short effects.

I drop a couple of pounds every morning on my AM 7 mile run. It is worse in the depths of winter as I loose even more water through respiration.

Most diets include stuff that causes you to lose water weight in the first week so that you stick with the diet (you see fast results), but rapid weight loss is usually just rapid water loss. A long term sensible diet that you can live with forever and a sensible exercise program are the way to go to lose weight and get healthy.
