And yet... what if they didn't? What if this is really something they have no explanation for and just caught on camera?

If that's how we want to run things... then we may as well not have this section at all *shrug*

In that case, what is left to say about it?

Well... I'm not objecting to that

    See above.

You are essentially pleading for fake ghost videos to be discussed here. I know that this section will be very very quiet if people would actually do some research and ruling out before posting here. But yeah, I think that's how it should be on a science website that has a ghost section.

I think that certain people should stop fabricating supernatural explanations...

Okay... let me pose it this way:

If we ruled out every possible mundane explanation that we can conceive... then what?

    Then we have a case.

So, in other words, we can never have a case... since we can never rule out every possible mundane explanation, given that we cannot possibly know every thought and action that occurred before, during, and after the event.

He could at least try to rule out some obvious cases he can think of. Then perhaps he could ask the forum if they can think of any other ones that seem plausible.
If all mundane explanations people have come up with have been ruled out, then we have a possible supernatural event on our hands.
What I don't get is that some people are willing to 'go supernatural' while plausible mundane explanations are not ruled out. Excuse me for saying so, but that strikes me as borderline retarded.

Oh, it is; you've seen me harp on him for that exact thing.

In this case though, we finally have:
    1) Reasonably clear (and close) camera view
    2) No funky shadows, light tricks, etc
    3) Decent framerate and resolution
    4) A person who eliminated the most obvious possibility (string or some such through the window)
    5) A known object with a known range of weight and known material (glass cake lid)

This is something that can be analyzed to a reasonable degree.

Well, what about my idea? He didn't (actually no one) reply to it.

I never did study geometry... but accordin to you'r figures a blast of pressurized air is a reasonable hypotheses... thanks.!!!

I just re-read this - so a 1/2" nozzle at 40 PSI would be sufficient to make the cover hover off the counter and move?

Next question then is - are there any observable air-current effects on the surroundings (papers blowing, etc)?

Sorry, which one? About fabricating the whole thing?

So why hasn't this thread been cesspooled for being a pointless thread about a crazy theory? (hypothesis, not theory, but close enough)

No, that's not really true. It's the same as perpetual motion machines: testing them really is very easy, you just measure the input power and output power and if the output power is greater, it is a perpetual motion machine. The only real problem with supposed supernatural "evidence" is reproduceability: these events don't happen on demand, in front of a crowd of people with high-def cameras.

The fake problem here is the very -low quality video. Ghosts live in the white noise in low quality videos. They disappear when "investigators" show up and turn on the lights. The low quality is what allows speculation about ghosts to occur. But that's a problem that is square on those who propose the supernatural mechanism.

Wait, really? Do you have access to a different version of the video than I do? The one I'm seeing is only moderately good resolution (not good enough to see a thread or fishing line), the frame rate is terrible -- maybe half a frame per second, and the most critical part of the object is obscured from view (the part where any trickery would be applied)!
Hover? I'm not seeing any hovering in the video.
No. Nor would there need to be. The blast of air (or piston thrust) would be upwards.
