Somewhere recently I read an article about a hybrid design that is more efficient again over the currently available designs. I think it was called something like "Streigart?" I'm pretty sure I got the spelling wrong as it brings up nothing in a search. It's where the option of engaging the fuel engine for direct power transfer to the wheels in some conditions happens. Anybody correct my spelling? It also allowed for the vehicle to move even if the electric generator, storage or motor(s) fail to function.

    Mr. Chips,
    Like this:
    http://www.powertrain.se/pdf/strigear.pdf
    and read this:
    http://www.iea.lth.se/publications/point/Theses/pdf_files/petter.pdf
Conclusion is that car like the Honda Civic hybrid (parallel hybrid system) is the most efficient overall (combining city and highway driving mpg).

Thanks Fetus, seems the only enhancement might be performance with a loss of fuel efficiency. That makes intuitive sense to me. However, there is at least this site that claims otherwise http://www.powertrain.se/

Maybe it's time to start a new thread.

I find the following relatively recent article to be informative. Apparently the uranium oxide dust from use of depleted uranium munitions is far smaller than that resulting from mining or milling. It is stated that these smaller particles become lodged in the lung for the rest of the life of the contaminated person.

Probably the only way to settle this dispute (although I don't advise it) would be to vacuum out knocked-out Iraqi tanks, and empty the bags in American playgrounds.

Not at the moment. Current surface combatants are turbine driven through gas turbine modules coupled to reduction gears. The DD-21 Zumwalt class will be the first hybrid vessel in the USN. The benefits of this will be tremendous, not the least of which will be the survivability I mentioned before, as well as the issue you raise about a surplus of electrical power being available for future weapon systems. Nothing like a rail gun is in the works, but the chemical lasers that ONR has been toying with still use a rather large amount of electricity in spite of being chemically fueled.

I foudn it funny, having gotten to my new base, I'm going through the various breifings and training before i can go out and work on stuff. They mentioned depleted uranium as a poison, not a radiological hazard. They explained what personal protective equipment was required when working in areas exposed to munitions, etc. They also mentioned that composite materials are similarly hazardous when destroyed. Perhaps we should ban them too?

A tungsten cored bullet would have greater penetrating power over a lead cored bullet. The change to that would not be just environmental.
