The place would look bland without avatars. Custom user titles also add some interest. Signatures on every post are an unnecessary waste of space, bandwidth and time, and distract from the main discussion.

In other words, I support keeping things the way they are.

If anybody has a problem with somebody else's avatar or user title, please contact the administrators and we will take action if action is warranted.

Avatars and titles must adhere to general posting guidelines - i.e. no insults, no obscenity, etc.

    You are strawmanning.
When my complaint is twisted around like that, then it sure is easy to chalk it off as stupid.

Moderators having avatars with pictures of a character pulling their pants off and showing us their naked behind (Bell's avatar), and another flipping us off (Asguard's avatar) is insulting and obscene.

In the forums, people are not allowed to say things like "cun t" and "fuc k", and these words are edited out and people even warned.
But two moderators can sport the visual equivalents of those words as their avatars, and it's okay?

Oh for fuck sake. Its a cartoon with the lighsaber replaced with a digit. As for "kiss my dark side" what EXACTLY is wrong with it????????

I got the avatar from shorty and tiassa made up the quote to go with it

It WAS going to be "Piss me off and you will see my dark side" but i thought that was a little confrontational

    Grow UP

You're from middle east or something? I heard people there have some psychic problems with cartoons.

Let me guess, you complained about Bart Simpson's willy being shown in the Simpson's movie, didn't you? Did you scream in horror when Janet Jackson flashed her nipple? Do you call the police if a person bends over and their bum crack happens to be showing? What about if someone wears a g-string at the beach? Or god forbid, sunbathes without a bikini top on?

Are you also going to file complaints about the 'obscenity' of the following 'smilies'? :wtf::spank::shake:

What about James' avatar. I mean it's an image of a dog with that look on his face.. god knows what's happening out of the frame range cause that look.. What about Tiassa's? Very phallic, don't you think? As is Ripley's plane nose. And Orleander's? Did you see spongebob's eyes? He looks stoned! I mean, she could be encouraging people to start using if they emulate her avatar.. What about Absane's? Hell, Bert looks like he's about to do something funny with that baby... I could go on, but I am sure you are getting a hint of the ridiculousness of this whole thing.

If you find my avatar and Asguard's that insulting and offensive, why not disable the 'view avatar' option? How you can equate a cartoon of an orange backside as saying or showing "cunt and fuck", I honestly do not know. Frankly, I do not think I want to know because it would reveal more about you than I want to know.

Forlorn and phallic. But do you recognize it?

At any rate, I should change my avatar back to the picture of my daughter kissing the ball. Eh, I guess that doesn't have the dirty punch I was thinking. Kiss the stones? Whatever.

I just find the discussion of your and Asguard's avatars a strange counterpoint to how upset people get about the things we do prohibit. It's a vague theory, but I often find myself wondering whatever happened to even mildly refined humor. I mean, I won't call the cartoon moon particularly refined, but that's not the point. It's like a lot of people have to rush to the most extreme they can find, and when they're told they can't go there, they get upset about the slightest departure from the puritan. It's kind of weird. My mother called it "sour grapes" when I was a kid.

Not that I would accuse Greenberg of sour grapes per se. Rather, I can't figure the angle. Anyway ... I was supposed to be off to bed a while ago. But then my daughter woke up and we're having a picnic at 5:30 in the morning, so ... yeah.

do you guys realise that the middle finger sybol was actually a sign of male potency rather than a "go away" or "i hate you" symbol?

    Its another pagan phalax sysmbol

Therefore it would be against my religious freedom to remove because i am closest to beliving in pagen tradition and witch craft

The most obvious solution would be to be able to turn off certain avatars (which I would), but that is probably not the easiest one programing-wise.

Actually, Bells and Tiassa, Greenberg's professional artistic and psychological credentials are not amiss here. Skim through this paper: The Influence of the Avatar on Online Perceptions of Anthropomorphism, Androgyny, Credibility, Homophily, and Attraction

"Uncertainty reduction theory posits that people's primary goal in an interaction is to reduce uncertainty about the person they are interacting with. In reducing uncertainty, people strive to understand people's behavior during interactions as well as to predict future behavior."

"Credibility was negatively predicted only by whether or not the image was an object or animal. The effect sizes show that, compared to humans, animal images reduce the perception of credibility and object images reduce it even more. Homophily was also predicted only by whether the image was an object or an animal."

"Conversely, a green lizard avatar was the least attractive, homophilous, and credible and the one that users were least likely to choose."

Which would make his outlook even stranger, Ripley.

Greenberg is welcome to tie his objections into that paper. In fact, this being Sciforums, we encourage it.

    These responses are inappropriate.

And the comment to "grow up" is ironic, is it not?

It doesn't matter what you think it is. It is what the majority of people here think it means. Personally, I take it to mean "up yours".

Don't get me wrong. I opened this thread to see what community thinks about the problem. Not to make fun of anyone. If I wanted to make fun, I would change my avatar and title to "polish my lightsaber" or something similar to that.

I never found avatars and usertitles offensive, except if they represent violent, pornographic images or other content inappropriate for majority of members or regulated with forum rules.

I never found that avatars and usertitles are dedicated to anyone except member who wears them (there were some exceptions in the past of course).

So Asguard's avatar is nothing but funny picture to me. It's not saying "Fuck off", "Up yours" or whatever. He has that Yoda avatar for ages (new is recently added thanks to the "New avatar" thread).
I don't see anything wrong until avatar doesn't depict something truly insulting, disgusting or disturbing.

As a small chronology, those were my avatars and usertitles:

As you know, my username means "Bloody Hell!" which is swearing, right?
My first usertitle, accompanied with avatar that depicted kid dressed as pumpkin, was "What The Figure!" that represented acronyms WTF in funny and nice way (such as my username).
So instead Bloody Hell! WTF! I had my polite username.

My second avatar was this one:

Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image!

Accompanied with the title: "Scratch The Force!"

I had no intent to insult anyone, I saw it and it was just hilarious how some member of SW movie crew, dressed as a Stormtrooper is... moving... around...

Then I had famous animated Parental Advisory avatar with all the nasty words switching very fast, fortunately for a day only.

I switched it to standard Parental Advisory sticker.

Then I had even my picture for 15 minutes.

... And other persons, I had Maynard James Keenan, Christopher Lee, some unknown vampire chick in my avatar...

    I had many titles:

Evil Übermoderator, Corpus Delicates, Stone under a tongue,...

My recent title may be insulting to someone. Hey! He said he's fascist! Is that allowed?

My current title is misspelling of very common health issue called Plantar Fasciitis (check the spellchecker suggestions) or heel spurs or inflammation of Plantar fascia tissue in the foot (condition I have occasionally).
Its predecessor was a title: Eiffel's Tendon, also a misspelling of Achilles Tendon which is connected to Plantar fascia, again condition I have, nothing insulting.

For me avatars and usertitles are measure how someone is witty and funny, imaginative...
There is certain number of members who sees insults in every thing, including avatars and titles.
If we start to notice that kind of things, then we are puritans and paranoids maybe too much.

If we'll 'kill' them to satisfy our puritanism and paranoia, ok, but then we're not free to talk, free to express ourselves anymore.

As much as it was interesting to read the Pscyhological and historical aspects of Plazma's avatars, is it really that hard to make the avatars being able to turn off individually???
