I was toying with the concept of building a subway system in my city, and was pondering safety considerations.
I what sort of methods are used to prevent/minimalize collapse in areas prone to earthquakes?

Your best bet is to read everything you can find on the Los Angeles subway system. It was built just in the past few years, it's pretty small, and L.A. has the most strict rules about earthquake safety that you'll find. I'm sure they covered everything!
