As posted in another Forum, oh so long ago.[/I]

I am currently reading an interesting book by Victor Davis Hanson “The Other Greeks” which explains the roots of the Hellenic greatness and the agrarian roots of western civilization in general.
I believe the juxtaposition of modern Democratic states with ancient Greek ‘polis’ [city-states] and their Timocratic system, where citizens participated in the political system if and only if they owned a certain amount of farmed land , reveals why western civilization has become decadent and spoiled in comparison and exposes all that is wrong with modern western democracy.

Here is a brief outline of my conclusions thus far:
1] There was a minimum amount of land ownership which ensured full citizenship and also a maximum amount above which it was not permitted to go.
This ensured that the citizen farmer had a vested direct interest in the survival and well-being of the state and kept him interested in the political circumstances, kept him informed and kept him participating. Also the upper limit ensured that no single individual would corrupt the whole through wealth and overt influence.

Living today with the lobbying powers of certain groups, the apathy and ignorance of entire populations and the non-participation of a large percentage of the citizenry we can see the benefits of Timocracy here.

2] The individual was self-sufficient and self-reliant, growing his own food, constructing his own tools, and living by the sweat of his own brow by toiling the earth rather than by using others.
This honest and autonomous subsistence which cooperated with others in common goals creating the city-state ensured a citizenry of hard working, dignified, down-to-earth individuals that knew the value of things.

Today with the vast amounts of pampered, lazy individuals reliant on governmental or citizenry handouts, knowing the price of everything but the value of nothing and seeking the easy route in all areas of interest we can, again, see the benefits of Timocracy.

3] The obligation for military service of the citizen/farmer/hoplite created men taking responsibility for their own defense and the actions of their own government.
Military service also embedded a sense of honor, pride and discipline within each man.

Today we can witness the results of undisciplined minds that do not comprehend the concept of limits and the creation of classes that rely, for their own defensive needs, on the manipulation and coercion of underprivileged masses that are asked to kill and die on their behalf while they and their own sit comfortably miles away in relative safety.
This absence of a direct accountability or the escape from the consequences and the cost for the decisions taken creates foolhardy citizens who enter risky endeavors with little thought or concern since they will not directly pay the price for their own opinions.
If it were only the upper or middle-class children that were forced to go to battle in Iraq, for example, would it have taken place?

4] The practice of working the land created a certain kind of psychology.
Being one that has experienced farm work I can state with certainty that it forces a balanced, conservative, careful disposition that accepts his fate but fights against it and disciplines him to a strict life regiment which negates lethargy and laziness.
This battle of man against the forces of nature, humbles him, makes him cunning and patient and forces him to become creative and constructive.
Furthermore the benefits of physical labor ensures a fitness of body- a necessary part for the creation of healthy mind, as the Greeks themselves believed as a consequence of their agrarian roots {Healthy mind in a healthy body}- and hardens a man to the toils and tribulations of life in general.

Today the lethargic, laziness devoid of any sense of meter or balance has created obese, flawed weaklings expecting everything, demanding all, resisting nothing disciplined to nobody but only to the needs of their instincts
External phenomena are often the manifestations of internal health or sickness. We can see today how the aesthetic exteriors of individuals represent and internal unhealthiness of mind and then compounds the problem by inflating it.

It is necessary to mention that Timocracy was related to Democracy but had elitist leanings which made it a cross between a Democratic and Oligarchic system and was, for this reason, a precursor for the later development of Democracy in ancient Athens.
This exclusion of the majority of a states population because of a lack of land ownership, in my view, filtered out individuals without the basic ability or intelligence to own a small piece of land and farm it successfully thusly denying access to all without a certain mental standard or a psychological disposition, made the act of participation in political life a privilege not a right to be disrespected and taken lightly, as today, and imposed a sense of responsibility in the citizenry.
Also the limitation of land ownership ensured that each citizen, whether wealthy or middle-class, had to work the land, earn his living by toiling and minimized the amount of civil servants and other supporting classes, such as artists, teachers, governmental officials, bureaucrats of all kinds, merchants and yes even philosophers etc.

An attachment in relation to the subject.

A Rant

America is and will continue to be an empire built on war.
After the end of the cold war America found itself marginalized in a world not needing “protectors” and police men, it therefore needed to create situations in which its services were rendered necessary and it could project its power by evoking moral arguments and then complaining that: “…if they don’t step up to the plate then who will”?
One need only look into American culture to see the terror and insecurity it depends upon: terror alerts, duct tape, unnatural crime rates, gun control, pop culture constantly reproducing scenes of violence, capitalist insecurities about not being good enough and so on and so on.
Peace and prosperity are the US’s worst enemies; it therefore promotes strife, ignorance and insecurity to sell its products [mostly of military value] and itself as a superpower of “good”.
The hypocrisy and lies upon which American power is built on are now becoming discernable to all, except to the majority of its own populations inebriated by drugs, pop entertainment, consumerism and complete stupidity.
How many Americans knew where Iraq was?
How many know that Saddam was not the one that caused the 9/11 incident?
How many care?
As the new century comes to be it is evident that the American empire is in decline; existing in a constant state of debt and paying for its exuberant life-style on the rape and pillaging of lesser national entities and enforcing world discipline by spreading fear and terror through “what if?” scenarios, they now face a world better informed and unwilling to put up with their good/evil bullshit and their high moral facade of crap.
How convenient for them that by attacking Iraq they get rid of a possible counterbalance to Israeli regional dominance, get their hands on the cheapest oil fields on Earth, fight against the infringement of European power in the economies of the world by eliminating nations adopting the Euro as their mode of exchange [the events of Venezuela being another example] , they create a sense of insecurity and fear throughout the world and then present themselves as liberators and protectors against forces they created, eliminate all cultures that make apparent the lack of culture they represent, spread violence and conflict in order to advertise and sell the only products they produce: weapons for killing.
How long will we put up with this monster?
How long will we accept their disrespect for all international laws and then evoke them when it suits them?
How long will we accept a pseudo-democracy as our “ideal”?
How long will we accept warmongers, killers, idiots, and hypocrites, proclaiming themselves as moralists and freedom defenders as our leaders?
How long will we put up with this terror machine and close our eyes to the interests and powers it represents?
When will we start thinking as human beings and not as nationalistic sheep?
When will the American public WAKE UP and see that they belong to a human race and not to a national identity?
When will Americans rise up against their lethargy and apathy, close their TV’s, stop eating, and see that they are being manipulated and guided by, self labeling, “free press” entities that work for unseen silent powers that care nothing about their welfare?
How many people will Americans accept to be slaughtered in their name and for their immediate comforts?

Seems to me this type of monopoly by land owners would merely create a peasant system. A minority (the land owners) would have all the power while the majority (everyone else) would be out of luck. The land owners would have no reason to look after the interest of non-land owners and would over time simply eradicate any rights they had to begin with. About the service in the army, did a land-owner actually have to serve his own time. Could he send some peasants/slaves off to do it for him? Did he get added rank depending on how rich he was, how much land he owned? Also, just because someone owns land doesn't mean he farms it with his own hands. In fact, I'd think this type of system would promote more of a plantation type.

About the rant, probably when we get knocked down.

...Also the limitation of land ownership ensured that each citizen, whether wealthy or middle-class, had to work the land, earn his living by toiling and minimized the amount of civil servants and other supporting classes

With only the land-owners in charge, this could be changed rather easily.

Exactly it’s an elitist system.
But the elite would be quit large since there would be an upper limit cap, so as to deny huge plantations and monopolies.

No.

Did he get added rank depending on how rich he was, how much land he owned?
No he didn’t but it is natural to assume that the richer land owners exerted more influence.
But since there was an upper limit then this power was limited.

Also, just because someone owns land doesn't mean he farms it with his own hands. In fact, I'd think this type of system would promote more of a plantation type.
The upper limit ensures that land sizes were restricted to a size where each landowner and a handful of peasant workers or slaves could work all of it so as to prevent land from not being used and to prevent landowners from becoming too powerful.
It was an agrarian based system but one can see how it can be applied in other areas.

With only the land-owners in charge, this could be changed rather easily.
Not if you restrict the size of land ownership.
A restriction of liberty that is necessary.

About the rant, probably when we get knocked down.
Get ready, do you see the signs?
You are making enemies of even your old allies.
A nation drunk on power and pampered by years of decadence making it aloof and indifferent to the rest of mankind.
Huge mistake.
The same happened to Rome.
Destruction will inevitably come from within.

Wanderer,

I didnt see that part in the Rant about Chavez ruining the economy in Venezuala or the 100's of thousands of people who protest daily to get rid of him.

Its sounds like more of a Fuedal system. No thanks.

You are truly an......American.

Why thank you :)

Im going to go accross the street and eat a fatty tasty breakfast from a global company called McDonalds. Then im going to sit my butt down and read the paper. While doing so I will be sitting in a nice relaxing chair in an Air-Conditioned office. Outside there will be no protests, no starving kids begging in the streets, no oppressed women, and all my coworkers have teeth. The Western world is sooooo horrible. And did I mentioned im getting paid??

Funny how we are such a horrible country and yet hundreds of thousands of people are trying to move here.

See how American you are?
You rape a country, take away it's ability to fend for its own citizens and when they come begging at the door to survive you point at them and say:
"See they love us, they all want to be us."
I’m sure all those people in the ghettos and in prison and dieing because they have no insurance love the US.

Like a true American you’ve equated comfort and luxury with a good life; you’ve equated consumerism with virtue and freedom and you’ve assumed that being happy is life’s purpose.
You, my friend, are truly a moron.
Now go off and pretend you matter.

What??

Guess what. I can vote. I have FREEDOM. I have Liberty. I have RIGHTS. I decide my OWN future. Thats the nice thing about America you can make changes. Im sorry to hear that your life is pathetic but im sure its your own fault. But hey, lazy people love socialism.

Yo retard!!!

Guess what. I can vote.
For whom?
Let’s see…. One choice….two choices….three.... nah Nader is just window dressing.
You got more cereal selection than political selection.
What is the difference between a Democrat and a Republican candidate?
One is more blunt about who he’s working for.
Why do only 40% of Americans vote?
They are too stupid to care. They are more interested on who’s fucking Britney Spears.
They just want their gut filled and their mind inebriated.

I have FREEDOM. I have Liberty.
Really?!
Can you stop paying rent or the mortgage?
What does your “freedom” consist of?
Is your choice between Fruit Loops and Cherios what you call liberty?
Is your press free?
Who owns them, who runs them, who promotes the faces telling you the “news”, who chooses the subjects the point of views?
Who tells you what to believe, how to believe?
Who chooses your virtues?
Let me guess, Christian right?

I decide my OWN future.
Can you?

Thats the nice thing about America you can make changes.
Yea and look at all the changes you’ve made.
You are funny, retard.

Im sorry to hear that your life is pathetic but im sure its your own fault. But hey, lazy people love socialism.
I’m a socialist?
First I’ve heard of it.
Lazy?
What do you know of me?
Tell me you little retarded American.

Hey, do I smell Vietnam in the air?
Go off and die for your masters and as payment accept saturated fats and pop culture.
There’s nothing like a Coke to make you appreciate liberty; or is that Pepsi?

So please tell me about you oh so glorious country. Being that I am FREE I could always move there. Can you leave?

You didnt mention Rights? Why not? Would you like to talk about the RIGHTS that I have? Let me guess you dont have them.

I dont have to pay rent or a morgage. I can buy my house outright. I can live on the Streets in a Tent. Its MY CHOICE. Im sorry you live in some Cement shithole government complex. Do you have toilet paper?

Hey, do I smell Vietnam in the air?
No that just the shit hole you live in.

I think America should make a resolution to start trying to be more like Canada in every way, shape and form. Obviously the rest of the world looks to Canada for advice on everything from which brand of hockey puck is the best, to how set up health care in such a fashion that it only takes six months to get an appointment for a check-up.

Yes, I believe Canada should be the model for the inevitable one-world government.

What the fuck is wrong with you? That's the most absolutely ridiculous thing I've read today, how can you take an implicit moral stance and then criticize America's use of "morality" in propaganda?
For one who criticizes America's Christian-dominated government, you certainly reek of "equality, compassion and the brotherhood of man" yourself.

It was in a moment of weakness.
But you are right, the hell with them.
Let them stew in their own ignorant pot and pretend they are living the 'good life'.
I'll be there to take advantage of them all the way.
Aren’t retards fun?

Ta-umm, but that's awfully more difficult to live than it is to say.
How does one "take advantage of them" anyway?
It's all about attitude, Hellene. Once we struggled with nature for our livelihood, now we struggle with man.
So most figure that the way to power is by learning the expert manipulation of man.
But what are the great manipulaters but slaves of their slaves?

Comes down to attitude. A fairly good life is still possible - after all, dealing with idiots is far better than dying a nasty death of preventable disease.

Contentment is a danger as well - but I doubt it's a likely danger.

"did I just admit to an error? I must be losing my arrogance."

Hah! Caught you.

There are multiple ways of taking advantage of another’s weakness but the easiest one is to use them as entertainment by pretending you agree with them or mocking them openly. Both are fun.

Who is not a slave to a degree?
We manipulate nature because we are dependant on her.
But is mankind escapable?
If we could vanish into unsoiled frontiers then manipulating morons would not be such a survival necessity.
You can’t even become a hermit these days.
I didn’t say the way to power is manipulation. The only form of power I recognize is power over ones self, discipline and control. Sometimes this personal power has external ramifications, -desirable and undesirable, conscious and unconscious, purposeful and purposeless- that can be used to benefit the holder of power.
Wanting something and needing it are two different things. I can want sex, for example, but not need it. So power is still maintained.

But who amongst us is not dependant on morons and idiots for survival?
Being aware of human nature and being able to use it to achieve goals is prudent and clever.
Being in need of it is pathetic.

Comes down to attitude. A fairly good life is still possible - after all, dealing with idiots is far better than dying a nasty death of preventable disease.
That's what I'm saying.

Hah! Caught you.
I wanted to be caught. :bugeye:

Great fun, but I was thinking on a larger scale.

Who is not a slave to a degree?

Der Ubermensch!

I didn’t say the way to power is manipulation.

I didn't say you said that. But this is all known.

I wanted to be caught.

I'll bet you did.
