Well, it takes two for oral sex. Sounds like you can't be trusted either with your sexual immorality.

Because ~60 years ago people were having exactly the same argument about blacks. They shouldn't be allowed to marry whites. They did not deserve extra rights. They were genetically inferior. They were inherently shiftless and immoral.

Somehow we got past that, too.

Oh, the response against someone who looks significantly different than you do is a very inborn response.

Sure they do. What law prohibits you from marrying the one you love?

It is useless, non-procreative, purely hedonistic, perverted and selfish sexual behavior! It would disgust a lot of conservative people. It means you cannot be trusted to control yourself; you'll do whatever feels good without regard for whether or not it's useful or beneficial. Gays do the same things.

It costs the government a lot less than straight marriages. No education for the kids, no SNAP, no WIC, no dependent tax deductions . .. if you want to save money, ban straight marriage.

It was simply her lack in trust of men in our culture. I don't think that mistrust was truly earned. It is one thing to get a blow job from someone of the opposite sex and completely another to just decide to be gay. There is a giant leap that would be taken there from doing one thing to another. If you are unable to see that jump then you would have to be gay or different from the normal straight person.

No, I would think it would be something that has happened to you that made you afraid and prejudice against black people. I don't know of any normal people that are born that way.

The one that says you can get a divorce.

Oh whatever, you are just substituting propaganda for facts. It is well known that missionary style being the only appropriate way to have sex was just propaganda created by the government. They just wanted to set good examples for people on television. You would have to be ten times the pervert to give in to gay sex even though you are not attracted to the same sex hormonally. You have to admit some of the most perverted people out there would be gay's. Not all of them are gay because they are wired the wrong way.

What a bunch of complete nonsense. Like they would have to ban straight marriage, they could just take away the benefits of marriage.

Really? You've never seen a child be afraid of someone who looks very different? Interesting.

We all have instinctive reactions to people to classify them into "outsiders" and "one of us." It's a basic instinct that came about back when we were living in small tribes and outsiders were threats. Fortunately we can overcome it with our reason.

Oh, did you not know that gays can get divorces too? It's the same as for straight married couples.

And heterosexuality being the only appropriate way to have sex was just hateful propaganda created by homophobes. Your point?

If you mean it's hard to do, agreed. It is just as hard for a gay person to have sex with someone of the opposite sex as it is for a straight person to have sex with someone of the same sex.

Oh, I've met some women who would put lie to that.

Agreed. Most are gay because they are wired the _right_ way - at least for them.

If they took away all the benefits of marriage at a federal level, agreed - and that would be another good solution to the problem.

So someone didn't want to be married to you, and you think that violates your rights?

    She showed excellent sense.

Yes it should be against the law to get a divorce and they should be arrested or hanged like in the "good ole days", women brake the holy sanctity of marriage and often leave their husbands to become single mothers within a year of their child's birth. It breaks my religious rights and I don't have that religious freedom in America, I even believed in this while I was atheist. She would have most likely have listened to some complete nonsense from someone like yourself.

You want it to be illegal for women to leave your property once you "own" them? Wow.

I think it could help a lot of people from turning gay, even though I could never bring myself to wanting to be gay because of it. I guess you are lucky that you don't have to be alone like I do since you could just decide to turn gay, I don't have that luxury.

Wow. From what you've told us so far, most gays are a lot more moral than you are. I've never met one who considers people property.

Why because I believe they where right to enforce the sanctity of marriage? Marriage doesn't even mean anything when everyone can always just get a divorce. Why would you even get married but to just take benefits?

I think it is wrong for a women to consider herself as being property for having to stay married. Even more of reason why they should be treated as so, if they can not even see themselves as being mutual lovers but having to be owned because they have to stay married to someone.

Oh, that's disgusting. Well property comes and it goes, allowing divorce in my book would be treating them more like property. How do you think that is gross if now they can be exchanged like property? I don't know of any kind of property that has to stay permanent. I see it more as them being a special person unlike property, you wouldn't have to hold on to property and not be able to exchange it.

So if there actually were some kind of treatment a black person could say to change their ethnicity to white, you'd think blacks shouldn't have equal rights?

And since there is no treatment for homosexuals to change their sexual orientation, why don't you believe that they deserve equal rights, too?

Special college funds and equal opportunity laws aren't "benefits" of being black. They're attempts to correct an imbalance that puts black people at a disadvantage from the start. As a white male, you are far less likely to require a special college fund, and chances are you already work at that place without a single black person.

The trouble with being a bigot, Layman, is that it promotes ignorance. Not just to the impressionable who are trying to shape their worldview, but also to you, the promoter. The moment you accepted this kind of garbage as truth, you made the decision to stop learning. Every argument against you is propaganda or the posturing of secret homosexuals trying to shame the world into acceptance, and no amount of logic or reason will change your mind.

You can still change, but the longer you keep at this the more you numb yourself to the truth, and the harder it becomes to grow out of it.

How would they be receiving more rights than you?

Sexual perversion is subjective. What's perverse to you might be normal to me, and vice-versa. There is no objective measure against which we can judge any act, let alone the wholesomeness of sexual appetites.

And if we're all gay, then you must be black. By your own logic, you can't argue on behalf of a group unless you belong to it.

Being gay can be natural without being a genetic disorder. A disorder suggests that there's something wrong with them, and since homosexuality doesn't affect anything other than which sex one wants to sleep with, I see no reason to classify it that way. To shorthand it for you, yes, gay people are born that way. No, gay people cannot change their sexuality through treatment, and they shouldn't be expected to since their behavior does not exploit or hurt anyone.

Saying "they don't deserve rights because they're choosing it" doesn't make sense, and isn't any sort of explanation for why you believe what you believe. In other words, that statement is the "what," not the "why." You've failed at every opportunity to explain yourself, and I know it's because you've really never given this any thought beyond the "what." The why has never occurred to you. And therein lies the danger of such beliefs, Layman.

Take some time to actually think about that, as well as the other questions I've asked you.

They do have equal rights. The have just as much of a right to marry someone of the opposite sex that I do. If they don't choose to take advantage of this right that is their own problem.

I wouldn't be able to claim marriage benefits by living with someone of the same sex so why should they? Because they are but buddies and I am not?

What the world is coming to is the white straight male is at the biggest disadvantage to everything, they just haven't woken up yet to realize it. I am actually a minority in my home town and I do not get any extra benefits and suffer because of it.

Gays do hurt people, every time they kiss in public. A piece of me dies inside every time this happens. Then they do this on purpose just to annoy people. A lot of straight people don't even think that PDA is okay among straight people. It is even worse with gays.

My gut tells me that I shouldn't try to make myself okay with seeing this or I would become as perverse as they are. If they are justified in being gay then I am equally justified in be disgusted with gays. I shouldn't have to try to make myself more gay to make gay's feel more comfortable when they discomfort me. Asking me to be okay with gay PDA would like asking a gay person to not to be gay. I couldn't even watch comedy central last night because it was just too gay, I fail to see how people being gay is funny and it is very distasteful.

By that logic, allowing them to marry each other also gives you the right to marry someone of the same sex, so you'd still have just as many rights as they do.

    Of course you would.

You can't even spell "butt" correctly. You are the definition of a moron.

You're just parroting hate speech you've heard or read (though you capacity for reading is a bit suspect, so let's stick with "heard") elsewhere. There isn't an original thought in any of this putrid nonsense.

No it doesn't. If that were true, there'd be nothing left of you.

How interesting it is that you began this discussion by saying you were merely grossed out by homosexuality. Now it personally injures you, to the point where you claim to lose a piece of yourself every time two homosexuals (men, most likely; you're probably just fine with two women doing it) display their affection for each other. Either you were full of shit earlier, or this is how you react when you realize your hate won't find any purchase among the people you're conversing with. Call everyone else gay and then lambast homosexuality as being far worse than even you originally claimed it to be.

You know what I think this is really about? I mean really really about? I think you're a homosexual. I think you're repressing it because you're afraid of the reaction of your family and friends. That would explain how eager you are for there to be some kind of "cure" for what you are; it's a light at the end of the long, depressing tunnel. And in your eagerness to hide your identity as a gay man, you've taken to vitriol. You certainly wouldn't be the first. In fact, the loudest critics of homosexuality tend to be the ones having the most gay sex. Sure, they're paying for it, or getting in men's room stalls at airports, but they're out there doing their thing like it's going out to style. I have a feeling that's what you're doing, too.

    Does it make you jealous?

PDA is PDA, regardless of the participants.

And there it is. The "If I'm okay with it, I'll start chugging dong, too" moment.

Jump on in, sweetness. Unburden yourself of the fear and hate and just enjoy being who you are.

I don't think you know what "justified" means.

You're right. You're plenty gay enough as it is.

No one's asking you to be okay with any kind of PDA. If you don't like it, you don't like it. All anyone's asking of you is to not hate people because of who they have sex with.

You're clearly upset by the fact that others are comfortable with their sexuality, while you're struggling so hard with your own. No one faults you for that. What is your fault is turning your self-hatred outwards. Being mad and scared that you're gay doesn't give you the right to start a crusade against others. Redirect that energy in a positive direction.

    NOTE FROM THE MODERATOR:

It has been quite a while since this discussion has been about WORDS. Let's stick to a topic that's appropriate for the Linguistics subforum, or else start a new topic in EM&J. Better yet, simply participate in the discussion of this topic that's already in progress there.

Yes, I know I've been as guilty as anyone else. But if this continues, I'll separate out all the non-linguistics posts into a separate thread, and move that thread to EM&J. The Moderator of EM&J can then merge it into the existing thread.

Linguistics doesn't get a lot of traffic so normally I don't mind veering off topic, but this is getting ridiculous.

    Thanks,
    --F.R.
