    If it were not for safety and environmental concerns, thermonuclear devices could be detonated in a ( large ) controlled environment and the energy collected in an exothermic process.

    Bottom line: at this moment fusion could be theoretically practical as an energy provider.

    I wouldn't call "blowing up all the nukes at once" very practical, but I suppose it is possible.
