Cleaning up leaves in the fall. That's by far the most futile thing one can possibly do. It's pointless! Not only the leaves keep falling, there's no purpose to it! Who cares the leaves are on the floor? They don't hurt anyone, do they? So what's the point in wasting time doing it? :bugeye:

Does anyone have a reasonable argument in favor of cleaning up the leaves?

May I also point out that cleaning up leaves is like trying to shovel snow off your property the whole winter long. While shoveling snow DOES have a purpose (unlike leaves), that is, take snow off the driveway so that you can get out with your car, it's a bit pointless because the snow keep falling during the storm! AFTER a storm, it makes sense.

I think the main reason people do it is b/c leaves will kill grass if left on top of it..

For one, you can make compost out of 'em.

Plus - tho' it's not necessarily my favorite activity - sometimes after an annoying day in 'Proletarianland', a bit of mindless physical activity can be quite relaxing.

Didn't you ever see one of those old Kung Fu flicks where the monks have the 'new recruit' at the monastery rakin' up leaves to focus his mind.

You're obviously sadly deprived and uncosmopolitan.

That may be, but it's still easier to shovel away a smaller quanity of the stuff.

Plus, if you have or want to go somewhere once it stops snowing, it might well be easier to drive thru half as much accumulation.

I feel you should rake some leaves to clear your blocked up mind, before you become utterly irrational.

No sense pointing out practical matters to the poor fellow.

    His mind is closed.

That's why you install artificial turf. No grass to kill.

Leave leaves! The most futile activity has to be shaving. Most men do it every day and some more than once a day. The hair always comes back! We think smooth is more acceptable, perhaps more attractve to the opposite sex, but deep down despite the daily manly ritual whgicch gives us valauble tgim to refect on whatever, I suspect it drives most of us nuts. We spend zillions on lotion, balm and mosituriser so we don't all look like facial bloody fishmongers with roadmap scars as we run the daily risk of cutting open capilliaries every bloody time. Women aren't spared either. Many do it too, but I'd imagine mostly downstairs or the legs. And to make matters worse we are led to continue this daily tragedy lest we look like Osama bin Laden come the weekend. Give me leaves any day.

Might I suggest that there are a few ways to remedy your dilemma and be in balance. There are many bushes that can be used in place of trees that are just as nice looking but don't grow as tall or drop leaves all over. What few leaves they do shed aren't much to really worry about. Another thing is just remove the trees altogether, that way you'd have no leaves at all and no bushes to bother with. There are also trees that have fewer leaves on them which also could be substituted for the ones you have there now.

I only have bushes and shrubs on my property because we get hurricanes here which can reek havoc on most trees breaking them, twisting them or even uprooting them. removed the trees and with all of the bushes I've added my property looks much better than it did with the trees. Good luck with whatever you choose or just pay a neighborhood kid to rake them up if you don't want to bother.

Won't the snow that will soon come also kill grass? :bugeye:

While I DO see the futility of shaving (which caused me not to shave for the longest time), it is definitely LESS futile then raking leaves.

When I bike the leaves that have not been cleaned up start rotting and become this slimy mess, and if by Gods' no-mercy I happen to bike on that slime the bike will start slidding...and not just bike...people too can get hurt.
