Discussion in 'History' started by Pasta, Feb 5, 2010.

?

Why do you think the Holocaust is well advertised, and victims of Communism are not ?

  1. A. Jew are influential in pushing advertising of what happened to them in schools, books and films.

I was thinking, why is it Jews got their own Nazi "Holocaust" for 6 million deaths, when during the same century tens of millions of civilians were killed by Communist governments (not including deaths because of war) ?

It seems that more lives were impacted by Communist mass murders than what happened to the Jews. So what kind of memorial do they get ? Why don't they get a big piece of history books and films like the Jews have ?

Right now mass murder is being carried out in eastern Congo. It is estimated that the death count to date is well over 5 million, but few people seem to care or notice.

The Jewish holocaust is well known in the West because it happened in the middle of World War II, which Western nations were intimately involved in.

Who said they don't? Last I checked, Solzhenitsyn was standard high-school cirriculum, there's the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum in Phnom Penh, Checkpoint Charlie in Berlin, etc.

The 6 million jews exterminated got a name synonomous with it, the "Holocaust". Anything for the tens of millions of victims of Communism ? any name we can ever given to that larger holocaust ?

On TV I see anti-communism, anti-bolshevik docus all the time. But recently, I've noticed a new trend: glorifying, and apologetic films about the Nazis. History is being rewritten.

I only heard of Solzhenitsyn's "The Gulag Archipelago" on TV, and never heard of anyone dying under Communism in the 20th century in any school (elementary - university).

I think it would be a tough sell to try and convince people that victims of Communists in the 20th century have gotten anywhere near as much attention as the Jews of the Holocaust, in schools, TV, or history books.

1/3 of Cambodia's population was exterminated under the Communist rule of the 70's, so it's natural that they'd have something for that; yet I never read about that in any of my Jr. High or High School history books. The Holocaust YES, the victims of the Communist Khmer Rouge.....what's that ????

Of course not, but since WW2, it's become synonomous with the Jewish Holocaust.

    Where ? I'm curious ?
On rare occasions I've seen films on the history channel about Soviet Union's democide, but that's about it.

So get off your ass and do something about it. The Jews took it upon themselves to make a record of their plight, and to make sure people knew about it. There is nothing wrong with that whatsoever. The wrong part is the fact that our schools do not for the most part teach a comprehensive history of everything, it's up to you to educate yourself better, and not just rely on popular culture.

That's not my point. My point is, why is it that an even greater democide occured in the same century under a few Communist nations, yet there's no name stygmatized with that ? (like the Holocaust) Why is it there's many movies about the Holocaust, yet few if any movies about the victims of Communism ?

I don't have the resources and connections the Jews have.

It's just an interesting question I was posing; why do you think there's so much emphasis in culture (schools, movies, books) on the Holocaust, yet far less emphasis on the greater death toll under the Communists during similar time periods.

Sounds like you should have gone to better schools.

Those of us old enough to remember the Cold War know that it wasn't marked by any shortage of publicization of Communist crimes and abuses.

Because Jewish people made it their business to educate people on the subject. Maybe you would care more about it if you were a victim too. Many of us have living relatives that survived, and if not, we know of hundreds of ancestors that we never got to know.

I do recognize the mass murders that took place in the USSR. Part of the campaign of education on the part of Jews is precisely to education people on other holocausts! Just look at the website of the Holocaust Museum, they are doing nothing to perpetuate a myth that only Jews were the victims.

One reason could be that Jews were selected as a group whereas The Purges (oh look, it does have a name - see here, also called Yezhovshchina) were fairly indiscriminate and purely internal (to the Soviet Union).
They were exterminated as part of a planned, targeted, programme due to specific "reasons" (religion/ ethnicity(?), etc); Stalin, on the other hand operated more or less on whim and paranoia.
Another would be that Germany was invaded and taken over, and the leaders held to account by an international court: that didn't happen in Russia.
