    The ionosphere has nothing to do with deflecting the solar wind. A magnetic field _is_ necessary.

    Even if this was relevant, true and practical (all of which characteristics are in severe doubt) it wouldn't matter one jot. The argument is that life could not arise on these planets because of the absence of a field. For the inhabitants to create such a field to enable their own origin rather mixes up cause and effect.

    but is it one of the coolest concepts ever, and something I desperately want to be true? Absolutely.
