T for Thallium (and also for Tsinghua University, TongRen Hospital and Telemedicine).

Thallium is a highly toxic chemical element.

In 1994, Zhu Ling was a sophomore at Tsinghua University in Beijing who reported experiencing acute stomach pain and with extensive hair loss, and later pain in her legs, loss of muscular eye control, and partial facial paralysis. Unable to breathe on her own, she was placed on a respirator. She went to TongRen Hospital.

Frustrated with her doctor's inability to help, her friends posted an "SOS" letter on a number of Internet usenet groups describing her symptoms and asking for a diagnosis. Responses began pouring in within a matter of hours, and news reports hailed the event as a milestone in Internet culture, especially in China.

Of the more than 1,500 responses which Zhu Ling's friends received, about one-third proposed that she was suffering from thallium poisoning. Subsequent tests confirmed that Zhu Ling had extraordinarily high levels of the metal in her body. Doctors were able to administer the antidote in time to save her life, but she sustained serious permanent neurological damage.

    Venn diagram

    (definition)

Definition: A visual depiction of membership in sets according to binary properties, using overlapping ovals to divide the plane into regions. Regions inside an oval have the property the oval represents, while regions outside it do not have the property. Regions are shaded to show combinations of properties (or sets) of interest, or elements are placed in regions corresponding to their properties (or membership).

Note: Here is an example of a Venn diagram with three properties: male/female, happy/sad, and short/tall. Some of the combinations, such as sad, tall males and happy, short females are labeled.

Y is for the Yarkovsky effect (and for a secondary effect called the YORP Effect)

The Yarkovsky effect refers to the lop-sided emission of radiation from a rotating object orbiting a star due to uneven heating, named after the Russian engineer I O Yarkovsky.

Yarkovsky first discovered and proposed this phenomenon around 1900, although not actually measured until a century later on the asteroid 6489 Golevka, which is estimated to be subjected to a force of about 0.25 newton, for a net acceleration of 10^−10 m/s².

Such constant forces act over millions of years, perturbing the asteroid's orbit enough to transport it from the main asteroid belt to the inner solar system, and thus, scientists have used it to explain why Earth is hit surprisingly often by meteorites.

    Arstronomy

An increasingly rare typo form (since the advent of auto-correct functionality of word processors) of the more commonly used "Astronomy". Be careful where you put those telescopes.

    C is for conniption fit,

A fit of anger or panic expressed verbally loudly and with overt bodily gestures. I can see where this round of A-Z is headed.

C is also for crater. Anyone care to comment on my post about the Dartmoor National Park?

    F is for Fitts’s law

A principle of human movement published in 1954 by Paul Fitts which predicts the time required to move from a starting position to a final target area. Fitts’ law is used to model the act of pointing, both in the real world, e.g. with a hand or finger, and on a computer, e.g. with a mouse.

    OK Gemmie,

    J is the letter:

This article is about the unit of energy. For other uses, see Joule (disambiguation).
    Joule
    Unit system: SI derived unit
    Unit of... Energy
    Symbol: J
    Named after: James Prescott Joule
    Unit conversions
1 J in... is equal to...
    SI base units 1 kg·m2/s2
    CGS units 1×107 erg
    kilowatt hours 2.8×10−7 kW·h
The joule (pronounced /ˈdʒuːl/ or /ˈdʒaʊl/);[1][2] symbol J), named after James Prescott Joule, is the derived unit of energy in the International System of Units. It is the energy expended in applying a force of one newton through a distance of one metre (1 newton·metre or N·m). In terms of dimensions:

One joule is defined as the amount of work done by a force of one newton moving an object through a distance of one metre. Other relationships are:
    The work required to move an electric charge of one coulomb through an electrical potential difference of one volt; or one coulomb volt (C·V). This relationship can be used to define the volt;
The work required to continuously produce one watt of power for one second; or one watt second (W·s) (compare kilowatt hour). This relationship can be used to define the watt.
