Ah, well, good that you feel that way. So now I, and possibly String, won't have to bother reading any more of your posts.

    hOLY mOLY.

The pilings strike me to be terribly short for a building so awfully long.

I will never willingly get closer than a full mile to this 1/2 mile high building.

cause I'm the one living in China I have to comment on this low-qual steel talk.

Do you think the people selling the steel give a sh*t if it's gonna break in 30 years? Almost certainly No.

Did the steel pass all the tests? Almost certainly yes.

That's all there is too it, the rest is guessing game between you two. Who tested the steel? What did the actual report say? Was it fabricated? blahblah and etc.

    Edit.

This tower sort of reminds of my that big unfinished hotel in North Korea. At least Dubai is smart enough to finish it... And if it lasts more than 100 years I give it an A+ for psychological effects. For usefulness it's hard to say as I don't know much about that area.

I assume that tower is all about attracting tourists, not so much for the local people directly to live in. This is my problem with the whole issue though. Who the hell would visit a country that kills tourists for having sex on the beach etc. Not many people, that's for sure. "Let's go to Hawaii, or Thailand! Nono... I would rather be bored as hell in Saudi Arabia... and if I try to do something fun I might be killed..." (you get the point)

If I was Dubai World I would have built subways or better trains or buses or highways or schools etc. Rather than 'the biggest tower in the world!" In my opinion this group has way too much oil and too greedy. I hope it starts going the route of 'philonthrocapitalism' or whatever that word is. Oh well,

Due to the nature of the tests, not every bar of steel can be tested (ie, not all testing is non-destructive.) NDT alone is not suficient to determine the tensile strength for example. Therefore, a sample (say a batch of every 1000) are selected and tested. If you have a lot of confidence you may decide to test fewer. You wont be able to test every single one however, without destroying every single one. It possible to obtain a small sample of each one (say a billet machined specifically for the test) but you are now talking about a huge amount of testing and a great big test programme - that is if you insist in testing each delivery. So it comes down to quality control, ultimately, who are responsible, and not the chinese suppliers. Overconfidence in the first place meant quality control checks were not a stringent as they need to be.

At the end of the day, if you want chinese steel, sure its cheaper than elsewhere, but you need an expensive (potentially wasteful) test program to ensure you catch bad batches, more so than for steel sourced from more reliable consistent providers.

Huh? I was agreeing with you! About the gypsum wallboard ....I even made a comment about seeing films about it and how nasty it was. Did you read any of my post except those first few words ....then stopped reading? ...LOL!

Well, you keep saying that, but where is the evidence to back it up? Why should anyone believe you if you have no factual evidence? Just saying something, over and over, does not make it true.

How would you like it if I posted some untrue, derogatory messages about you here at Sciforums ....and even if I had no evidence, I just kept posting it, day after day after day. Soon, would people come to believe it about you? Is that what you're seeking here ....to convince some people by brow-beating them into acceptance?

Opinions are fine, but you also can't just keep stating such wild opinions without some semblance of evidence or facts or even circumstantial evidence, etc.

Anyone can take what I am saying however which way they want, and if they are really interested they could do research, find out/verify for themselves. Its up to them.

You would be an absolute fucking idiot to take anything on an anon forum as gospel truth without your own research. And whether you decide to do you own research depends on how important knowing about this stuff is to you.

Like I said, this is based on my own experience, so if you dont like it then thats your problem. If I could be bothered I could upload evidence, but why the fuck should I bother? Who the fuck are you? And why should I care if one bloke somewhere on the planet thinks an opinion isnt enough? I have no obligation to you. If I was trying to convince the managment in a company I would bother, if I was responsible for ensuring the lives of those who depend on it, I would bother, otherwise, some random dude on sciforums isnt my priority.

Please, put me on ignore. I am only going to be participating in a discussion based on my experience. Interent links are not all that either. Theres an awful lot of trash out there and you can find link supporting evidence for pretty much anything.

    PS

Baron, I wouldnt give a flying fuck.

That's fine, Pinwheel, but make sure that people understand the difference between OPINION and FACTS. Big difference!

Yeah, see? You're complaining about the same thing I am!! All over the Internet, there's false info being touted ...all the time. You complain about it on the Internet, yet you come here and do it yourself ....and try to defend it.

Make sure that people understand that you're just stating an opinion ....even if it's an opinion based on some experience, it's still opinion unless it's backed up with facts.

Then I am sorry, maybe you didn't come accross clearly.

Anyhow, about the steel, I wouldn't be surprised if the chinese steel was lesser quality. When too many construction going on there can be increased demand for steel and users are buying whateveer they can. Time will tell how the buildings are standing up.

I can't think of the whole Dubai existing 50 years from now.....

Oh, I wouldn't be surprised either, but I hate wild accusations without benefit of evidence. The sheetrock issue is chocked full of actual, real, solid evidence. There's a family friend in the south who's home was repaired after the hurricanes ...tons of that damned sheetrock was used. His electrical system is almost completely destroyed ...and what isn't destroyed is so damaged that it would be a hazard to leave it in the house.

The steel? I don't know, just don't know. But if there was some uncertainty, they buyers could have demanded testing of each steel member. It's not that expensive when compared to the expense of a building falling down!
