Last Christmas, I got my grandson (then 4) a little hand held talking dictionary. He just loves it. He takes with him everywhere.

This year, I'd like to get him something a little more versatile. Is there some type of tablet-like device that will allow his dad to download games and educational apps, but doesn't allow him to get to the Internet. Ideally it would have good battery like (6-8 hours) and a charger, be fairly rugged, and have a touch screen.

I did a search for "tablets for kids" and came up with quite a few choices. Most of them are more or less full-function tablets and get very mixed reviews (poor battery life, slow, unreliable, etc.).

I would appreciate any suggestions.

PS: I'd prefer something around $100-$150, but would be willing to go higher if it was a really good device for a child.

Amazon has a special deal for kids on kindle fire or something. It's \$160, includes a kid proof case, and it comes with a no questions asked warranty for 2 years. You grandson can leave it out in the rain or stomp on it, and they will replace it.
It's a real tablet, too, not a toy, so he can install any kindle app, use it to read books, watch movies in it, etc.
