Should humans become cyborgs? What would you gain? What would you lose? Discuss.

Humans probably WILL become cyborgs eventually. Look for implanted microchips the size of cells enhancing intelligence and brain computation exponentially as well as the evolution of new senses like a satellite directed GPS accessed directly by our brains. Expect individual experiences to become downloadable and shared with each other like holographic movies or interactive video games (see Strange Days). Imagine understanding a person by going thru exactly what they went thru. Imagine experiencing anything you want without ever leaving your living room recliner. Then imagine the effect of all this on the evolution of the human body. We'll end up looking like fetuses wired up inside giant android-looking robots that will carry us around and do our menial chores for us while we go off into our dreamworlds.

Some already are. Artificial joints, implanted hearing aids, artificial lenses, pacemakers etc etc. The question is - how much further will we go?

Not for me. There is an interesting video on youtube, with some professor or something looking at this idea, and what it means.

For me i do not want to be any sort of cyborg.

But i am sure there is plenty out there who would like it.

Its your choice, and it should be upto you to choose, but not for me.

There is something about being human, with all its faults, that makes us human. But i can see why transhumanism come into people minds today as humans have so many faults really.
I am sure future generations will accept it, but me personally, i just want to live once and die, and die at what ever age i would normally have died at. I understand many want live extension, but not me.

It should be a persons choice, and science should not infringe on that aspect of freewill, as there is plenty willing to accept those things.

Like if i knew i was dying, and there was a choice of some cyborg impant, i would prefer to say no thanks. But i am sure plenty of others would say yes, but thats there choice, and no would be mine.

The beginning of Cyborg creation began when HCI (human-computer interaction) began. There is a clear distinction between the human and computerized technology in HCI, which differs from cyborgs in that cyborgs act out human functions.

'Ought we?' and 'Should we?' probably play second fiddle to 'How would we possibly prevent the tide of transhumanism from being inevitable?', regardless. A portion of any "next generation" would stand in line from early morning till next week just to have their bodies modified to resemble dinosaurs, if the biotech was available. Having rational or practical reasons for such need not even apply -- anymore than having required a good argument or justification for piercing an eyebrow with seventeen rings or planting a permanent tattoo entirely over one's face. All the more easier for "next generation" to crave future, trendy alterations which (at first) could largely be internal ability enhancements rather than these cosmetic engineerings of the past. It's simian-see, simian-imitate, simian get caught-up in the mob momentum of vogue when it comes to how we change ourselves. Only afterwards do the cognoscenti and the apologists try to impregnate the emotional / herd phenomenon with rationality -- concocting formal explanations and defenses for the emergence and need of the new events and its marketplace. Akin to projecting meaning and purpose onto a random inkblot from Rorschach days.

Sure. Resistence is futile (someone had to say it...).

I think that every human on the planet is disabled.

Technological augmentation to relieve disability is a good thing.

If we become cyborgs then suddenly all the sci-fi themes that drive the industry will become droll and boring.
This will have a severe impact on the share market that drives the sci-fi industry and associated merchandising.

Brings to mind the passage from a Kurt Vonnegut book where some astronauts land on a planet populated by fuel consuming intelligent automobile machine people. Almost immediately they are asked if they want to watch some pornography by the planet's ambassadors. They are shown a film of automobile people eating what appears to be fruit in a very noisy manner. The ambassadors go on to explain that the food in the film is simply just fuel that has been modified to have the appearance of fruit, since that is the only thing there is for them on the planet (the planet has a rocky landscape bereft of vegetation) . Apparently they also have a problem with prostitution, which involves someone coming around and pretending to cook a meal while saying how good the food looks and its just going to be really tasty when its time to eat.

Explain the logistic of how a human can become a cyborg.

    Per Darwinian evolution, perhaps?

Surgery. Replace a natural limb with an artificial limb, for example.

You've been watching FAR too much science fiction! While it's certainly true that we'll see ever-increasing use of technology to overcome physical handicaps, replace lost or missing limbs and certain organs, this picture you paint is pure fantasy - and frankly, childish.

And then replace the brain, too? Or do that first?

The only "common troll" here is you, bud! I make an effort to post realistic, well-thought-out things while YOU post nothing but nonsense 80% of the time. You need to grow up a little and get in tune with reality - instead of the fantasy world you live in. <shrug>

Right. So now I'M the troll because I'm quietly minding my own business replying with my own speculations to a clearly speculative OP while YOU come out of nowhere and jump my shit about being childish and trapped in fantasies? Clearly you haven't the faintest concept about what even constitutes trollish behavior. See below.. Now pardon me while I continue to ignore you and the other some odd 10 trolls that seem to do nothing in this forum all day but bitch about and insult other posters here.

Trolling (verb):"Being a prick on the internet because you can. Typically unleashing one or more cynical or sarcastic remarks on an innocent by-stander, because it's the internet and, hey, you can."

Guy: "I just found the coolest ninja pencil in existence."
Other Guy: "I just found the most retarded thread in existence."

Feel free to think whatever you like - but I've read dozens of your ignorant posts and still say you are very childish in your thinking. So grow up!

Not first, no. Maybe not ever.
My (wild) guess is that brain augmentation technology will first come in the form of add-ons, rather than replacements.

In a way, all information technology from paper and pencil to Google Glass is brain augmentation. How much does making it internal instead of external change the nature of the technology?
