This is a very good description for spree killers, but doesn't apply to serial killers. They are two very different types of killers. Many serial killers don't even use guns and they all try not to get caught and most don't want to go out in a moment of glory. Every region of the world has active serial killers, but spree killers do need guns which are readily available in the US.

The Washington Post ran an op-ed a week ago in which a woman pointed out the same statistic ("Mass Killing: a White Male Problem" or something like that). She drew an interesting conclusion: A) Almost all mass murderers are white males. B) The NRA consists overwhelmingly of white males. C) Therefore, why the hell do we listen to the NRA's advice on how to solve the gun problem? (Their solution to "too many guns" is "more guns." Yeah right.)

    Of course I immediately remembered:
    • Richard Rodriguez (I think I got his name right), a Latino, who killed a number of women in L.A. in the 1980s. Photos always showed him in his AC/DC t-shirt, which immediately drew the accusation that rock'n'roll causes uncivilized behavior. Funniest damn thing was that he was also wearing a Jack Daniels (popular brand of American whiskey) hat. Gee, do ya think it mighta been the booze instead?
    • John Allen Muhammad and Lee Boyd Malvo, two Afro-Americans remembered as the Beltway Snipers, who murdered ten people and wounded three in the Washington DC region in 2002. Muhammad said he was doing it to either impress his wife or to scare her into letting him share custody of their children. He was executed. Malvo was a minor who clearly had been indoctrinated by Muhammad, and perhaps some day he will be released from prison.
    • Seung-Hui Cho, the Korean-American who perpetrated the Virginia Tech Massacre in 2007 on his university campus, killing 32 people and wounding 17. He had a history of psychological problems that no one treated.
Nonetheless, I agree that most mass murders are committed by white males. Of course most of the people in the USA are white males!

In case you haven't noticed, mass murders are almost invariably committed with guns. Reducing the availability of guns would obviously make it harder for these people to acquire their weapons. However, they are all clever, resourceful and single-minded, so perhaps most of them would get their hands on a gun anyway.

It also bears saying that our mental health services could stand a tuneup. These guys are already known to be one taco short of a combination plate, and everybody just lets them walk around the community like they had good sense.

30,000 Americans are killed by guns every year. Somewhat more than half are suicides. The rest are murders, manslaughter or accidents made possible by the horribly easy access our people have to guns. The few dozen people who are killed by mass murderers every year are insignificant to the statistics.

Because of the way the "War on Drugs" is prosecuted. Every study ever conducted reminds us that the rate of illegal drug use in the Afro-American community is identical to the rate in the Euro-American community. Yet a black drug user is twice as likely to be arrested as a white one; once arrested he is twice as likely to be prosecuted; and once prosecuted he is twice as likely to be imprisoned. In other words, a black drug user is eight times as likely to be in jail as a white one. Can you say "racism"?

Duh? Where do you live? Do they not have maps in your country? Mexico is adjacent to the USA. You can walk across the border. Millions of people cross that border in both directions every year. San Diego/Tijuana is the most heavily used international border crossing in the world.

Add to this the fact that until a short time ago, this border represented the greatest disparity of income in the whole world. There are millions of jobs here that our own children refuse to do: hanging drywall, harvesting corn, slaughtering chickens, cleaning restaurant tables, etc. So the starving Mexicans came here to do them.

Actually, in one generation Mexico has turned itself into a middle-class country. People are now moving back to start their own businesses or to be employed by them. Net migration between the USA and Mexico is now southward, not northward. But Central America isn't so prosperous, so people from Guatemala, El Salvador and the other countries make their way through Mexico in order to cross into the USA.

-- A poignant note on the Beltway Snipers incident. Montgomery County, Maryland, where I live (Bethesda, Chevy Chase, Rockville, Gaithersburg, Silver Spring) was the site of several of the shootings. So our police force was participating in the investigation. Our police chief at the time, Charles Moose, was black. Like everyone, he assumed the killers were white. Then one of the breaks in the case came, an eyewitness who identified the snipers' car. It was an ancient dark-blue full-size Chevrolet. He slapped his forehead and said, "That's a brother's car! White people don't drive those things!" He was devastated to learn that a black man might be responsible for this type of crime; in the past it was always white people.

Oh BTW... he was the one who caught 'em.
