Rumor has it: In order to accept credit card, you must open a merchant account for your business. Similar to a bank account. Your merchant provider will send you a credit card machine for free. They will also provide you with an online interface. You have to plug the machine into the phone jack in the wall. You can then plug your phone into the machine. You can use the machine to take credit cards by swiping them or keying the number in. Or you can take credit cards through your online interface.

Charge the amount to the customer's credit card by swiping on machine, entering into keypad, or using online interface. It will authorize. The customer's card will be charged. The total amount of all your credit card charges for the day will be calculated at the end of the day. Your merchant provider will deposit that total amount into your bank account by the next day. Your merchant provider will not deduct any fees. Next month you will get a bill for the amount you owe to your merchant provider for all of your transactions.

You have to pay 1%-3% of each transaction amount to your merchant provider. Plus 15cents per transaction. Sometimes they charge a lower precent if you swipe the card instead of key the number into the machine or authorize it online. There is also a daily fee of 25c if you do one or more credit card transactions within that day. Some copanies charge low monthly fees for their merchant service. But other companies allow you to pay a higher monthly fee to get a lower precent charge. I have to pay high ($40.00) to get a 0.49% rate.

The only other way for your business to take credit cards is to sign up with some third party merchant serivice like paypal. Those cost more.

I went to AT&T store to pay my bill. $38.46. They have a machine that takes cash, but doesn't take change. I would have to pay $39.00, and get credit towards my next bill. If I want to pay the bill in exact change, the machine accepts card.

I went to the desk so that I could pay the exact amount $38.46 in cash. The person at the desk told me that they would charge me $5.00 to take payment at the desk. I cussed them out. I cussed the manager out. It is totally unethical for them to bill me, and charge me to pay in cash. Especially when I was never informed of this when I signed up.

From now on, I can go into the AT&T store to pay in exact change cash without having to pay the extra $5.00. Thanks AT&T!
