Distributed Denial of Service attack. Basically, you have a guy take control of a bunch of computers on the Internet. Then, at roughly the same time the guy tells off of them to flood a specific computer, server, or whatever. This system being attacked cannot handle it and shuts down, crashes, goes slow, or whatever.

Well SF is on a shared server. The whole server went down, along with every site that calls it home. So any of those sites could have been a target, which affects all the others. The website that was targeted was mysticgaming.net.

In theory, yes. It happens more than you might think. If the virus is dirtibuted and somehow lands on your computer, it can be told to do a DDoS at 11:00pm, July 28th on Google, for example. Given enough computers, one could take Google down. Likely? No. That is why smaller sites are targeted most often.

Well Dave says differently. However all we can do is speculate what happened based on what I read on the host's forums. Oh well. Anyway, you get the idea.

not only that but i also have a hardware nat router with a built-in firewall.
this really concerns me cause i leave my computer on all the time

other than disabling or unplugging my ethernet card how can i be sure my computer isn't being used without my permission?

Keep all of your software up-to-date. Do not run suspicious files. Have a good anti-virus. Don't let stupid people use your computer. Keep the firewall up. And anything else you can think of.

I do not run a firewall for various reasons. The only firewall I have is my router. I am only concerned about incoming traffic and not outgoing traffic (because I think I do a good job of keeping my system safe... except when I am looking for key generators).

the only thing i don't have is anti-virus.
but i do watch what i download and where from.
and nobody else uses my computer.
i also have 3 anti-spyware programs and i use all of them.
i also have all the critical updates to my OS.

    about the key generators.
absane you are asking for it by downloading from crack sites.

Well I try as hard as possible to get a seriel number before having to resort to a keygen. Butm even if I have to... given enough effort I can get rid of the virus or whatever.

But, I never said I stole
