You're up awfully late, Miss Water.
Can't sleep worrying about the forums?
Distributed Denial of Service attack. Basically, you have a guy take control of a bunch of computers on the Internet. Then, at roughly the same time the guy tells off of them to flood a specific computer, server, or whatever. This system being attacked cannot handle it and shuts down, crashes, goes slow, or whatever.
Sciforums was down?
I mean down not as in "down" but as in down as in rarety.
why would someone do this to sciforums?
or just a prick that can't get it up and thinks it's everybodys fault?
I think Absane had something to do with it???
this 'guy' you are talking about, can he for example use my machine without me knowing it? i have a direct connection to the web but i also have zone alarm installed. also i have my ethernet card configured to power down when the computer goes on standby.
Who ever it is will be back to brag about it wouldn't you say?
Well SF is on a shared server. The whole server went down, along with every site that calls it home. So any of those sites could have been a target, which affects all the others. The website that was targeted was mysticgaming.net.
In theory, yes. It happens more than you might think. If the virus is dirtibuted and somehow lands on your computer, it can be told to do a DDoS at 11:00pm, July 28th on Google, for example. Given enough computers, one could take Google down. Likely? No. That is why smaller sites are targeted most often.
Oh OK I wasn't paying attention.
Well Dave says differently. However all we can do is speculate what happened based on what I read on the host's forums. Oh well. Anyway, you get the idea.
even if i have a firewall? Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image!
not only that but i also have a hardware nat router with a built-in firewall.
this really concerns me cause i leave my computer on all the time
other than disabling or unplugging my ethernet card how can i be sure my computer isn't being used without my permission?

Keep all of your software up-to-date. Do not run suspicious files. Have a good anti-virus. Don't let stupid people use your computer. Keep the firewall up. And anything else you can think of.
I do not run a firewall for various reasons. The only firewall I have is my router. I am only concerned about incoming traffic and not outgoing traffic (because I think I do a good job of keeping my system safe... except when I am looking for key generators).
the only thing i don't have is anti-virus.
but i do watch what i download and where from.
and nobody else uses my computer.
i also have 3 anti-spyware programs and i use all of them.
i also have all the critical updates to my OS.
about the key generators.
absane you are asking for it by downloading from crack sites.
Yea. I use them because... uh... I lose my serial numbers a lot.
i used to have that problem till i got tired of reformatting my HDD.
then i discovered something called legit.
but hey i understand really i do.
after all, i got some pretty nice 'freeware' Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image!
Well I try as hard as possible to get a seriel number before having to resort to a keygen. Butm even if I have to... given enough effort I can get rid of the virus or whatever.
But, I never said I stole Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image!
*man.. dodged a bullet there*
I bet it was cool skill that did it. he was all pissed off from the thread where everyone was pointing out that he was an idiot.
