It's pretty easy to see from the poll results that the majority of people here (at leat the majority of those who've voted) aren't really all that interested in science. And that interest probably doesn't go much beyond making explosives or "why is fire hot?"

With that clearly in mind, I think the site name should be changed to something like "General Discussion & Chat Forums" since that would MUCH more accuratly describe what goes on here. Most of the actual science discussions probably constitute 10% or less of the total posts. Which is sad, really, because it was the name of the place that originally drew me (and probably others) here in the first place.

 

I didn't even need the poll RO, if you look at the science forums and how many people are looking in them or look at the post counts compared to the chat forums, you will see a huge difference. I'm neutral on the discussion anyways.

I was most interested on this site in learning about science, engineering (I follow a lot of science threads), and politics, yet I still sometimes wander off into different threads too.

Get real.
It's all relevant. Without the drek, the "good stuff" would be dead boring.
Forums need a bit of colour, trying to get too moderate character-wise could be a slippery slope.
There's a relatively easy way out of a sniping scenario: ignore it.
And shouldn't it be up to the reader to discriminate what's "real"? No-one's obliged to believe a thing (I see this principle in action all the time).
