Satori is connected to what is referred to as the inner self, which is different from the ego or conscious mind. The inner self makes use of the entire brain while the ego makes use of the more superficial parts of the brain. The entire brain can integrate one with nature and reality, since it has the needed processing power. The ego or the consciously controlled parts of the brain lacks this level of processing power, so it tends to pick a side (partial POV). The ego picks a side since this is the amount of data it can handle.

Enlightenment occurs when the inner self becomes conscious and the ego sits and watches its lead. But the moment you try to control the inner self, to gain its power, the connection is lost and the partial brain of the ego returns. But the memory is there and inspires people to find it again with the hope of finding the correct way to relate, which keeps that shy inner self from running away back to its natural place; fail safe reaction.

For example, we have two sides of the brain. The left brain looks at the world in a differential way, while the right brain looks at the world in an integrated way. The right brain will see an object as part of a larger class (we are all human). The left brain sees a differentiation of that same class (that is Joe). The inner self does both at the same time, but due to its higher processing power see the tiniest details in the context of unification of all classes (Joe is a unique human soul). The ego will see less detail using a smaller class for integration, with a slant toward one side of the brain (Joe is white instead of human)

If I was to guess, the inner self, which came first, appears to project the ego to create a secondary center. When the ego dissolves into the inner self the projector is turned off and what is left is only the inner self, but it lies within the memory matrix of what the ego had created. One becomes timeless but with a a degree of unique temporal distinction. This normally does not last since inner self and projection is natural.
