Sahara desert

    No, it's been like this for four or five thousand years, and its been a somewhat milder desert (but still a desert with less than 10in/25cm annual rainfall) for much longer than that. This is why there's a discontinuity in culture and genetics between North Africa and sub-Saharan Africa.
    The same way they live in any other desert. Just ask the Bedouins. There is food and there is water, just not enough of it to support a large population.

    When I was a kid we lived in the Sonora Desert in Arizona, on the outskirts of Tucson. There was an underground river, all you had to do was find it. We dug down 200ft (65m) and hooked a pump to it. There was plenty of water for a household.

    After all, the Nile drains into the Mediterranean, meaning that it has to cross the desert.

    The Bedjou are wonderful people IMHO.

    There is a river right out in the open near Death Valley, near the DuMont Dunes. Amazing to see water run freely in the middle of one of the hottest places on Earth. Can't drink it straight up though....

    Yeah, I done been a desert rat in my youth...
