And he's been a soldier for a thousand years He's a Catholic, a Hindu, an atheist, a Jane A Budhist, a Baptist and Jew. And he knows he shouldn't kill And he knows he always will kill You for me my friend and me for you He's fighting for Canada. He's fighting for France. He's fighting for the USA. And he's fighting for the Russians. And he's fighting for Japan And he thinks well brought an end to war this way. He's fighting for democracy, he's fighting for the reds He says its for the peace of all. Hes the one, who must decide, who's to live and who's to die. And he never sees the writing on the walls. But without him, how would Hitler have condemned him at Dachau? Without him Caesar would have stood alone He's the one who gives is body as a weapon to the war. And without him all this killing can't go on He's the universal soldier And he really is to blame But his orders comes from far away no more. They come from him. And you and me. Oh, brothers can't you see. This is not the way we put an end to war'
Buffy Sainte Marie, i've missed her voice and her song the Universal Solder is as valid and meaningful now as it was back when she first sang it.

Here's a translation, which you can see refers to a friendship between childhood friends who have been parted and met again. Literally it means that for the sake of our long friendship we should join hands and share a drink together in the spirit of good will. To extend that meaning it means that we should not forget our old friends and celebrate reunion with them. Should old acquaintances be forgotten, And never brought to mind? Should old acquaintances be forgotten, And days of long ago ! Chorus: For old long ago, my dear For old long ago, We will take a cup of kindness yet For old long ago. We two have run about the hillsides And pulled the daisies fine, But we have wandered many a weary foot For old long ago. We two have paddled (waded) in the stream From noon until dinner time, But seas between us broad have roared Since old long ago. And there is a hand, my trusty friend, And give us a hand of yours, And we will take a goodwill draught (of ale) For old long ago! And surely you will pay for your pint, And surely I will pay for mine! And we will take a cup of kindness yet For old long ago! http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20061226152141AATS8Ka

These have brought tears of laughter to my eyes. It is an irrepressible tune. Completely loopy. As for saddest song. Has anyone yet mentioned "Honey", sung by Bobby Goldsboro. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8MSoHcxEk9s He also did "Summer, the first Time" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mYHEBa6Xx48&feature=related

That is extremely good . The melody is extremely difficulty to pull off . Some of the tonality is similar to bending a note were it is off of the chromatic scale . Those guys make it work and well
Hey there, KJ...... Here's another one for your thread...... Johnny Horton - Whispering Pines http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4HWGtC1JeV4&feature=related
I’m not familiar with Johnny Horton, but I remember Roy Orbison was a sad song master with a hell of a voice. Crying Only the Lonely Mean Woman Blues Running scared
K. D. Lang recorded 'Crying' as a duet with Roy Orbison and later as a single of her own. She does an exemplary job of this song, IMO. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tv7S8v3rM-U&feature=related
