I don't know about Death holding me in bondage, but the way it suddenly rears its head in a promising manner every morning on my commute, it can sure grab my attention in a heck of a hurry!

    Cris,

Check your wrist and tell me you're not shackled to time.

"Now? When was I ever not free?"

The moment you were born into a world where survival and consumption rule your days.

"Isn’t acquiring debt a choice? If I consider that my parents created me then I might consider I owe them my life. Is that what you mean? But on the other hand I had no choice in the matter; my creation was their choice so they owe me, if anyone owes anyone anything. Who else could I be in debt to? (Note that I do not have any financial liabilities, e.g. loans or mortgages or such, and I’m sure you didn’t mean those types of things anyway)."

Don't you pay taxes. Even children pay taxes.

"I don’t see that, unless I count myself. I owe it to myself to seek truth and understanding and to enjoy life to it fullest. Other than that I don’t see that I owe anything to anyone or to anything."

I agree with your pursuit, but you must pay for the privilege. Enjoying life to it fullest comes second to responsibility?

"I’m not sure I would agree to the term bondage, but it was generally accepted that death was inevitable. So in that sense my freedom to live was at some point going to be curtailed. But I do not agree with that view anymore. The massive progress in anti-aging research and other Transhumanism activities indicates that within a few decades death will no longer be inevitable. Death will become something that only results from an accident or murder or suicide. Life in the future will become very precious and most will take great pains to protect it. And as science and technology continue to advance then limitless life spans will become a reality."

They better hurry with that anti-aging research. Death starts counting/collecting after conception. Also, will you be able to afford the science and technology when and if it becomes reality.

"And so with the full expectation that I will achieve a limitless life span and with the knowledge that I am completely free to do anything I wish then religions in my view would become even more worthless and irrelevant. Although I don’t see that they have any value now."

Some offer limitless life spans for the faithful.

    Hi Bowser,

It seems I don't need to do that either. It turns out that there are no laws that say one must pay taxes.

Check out this link on how to file zero tax returns, and avoid any penalties or legal action against you.

    Bowser,

And in that regard those persons and myself share the same ultimate desire - eternal life. It is the primary, and probably only reason that religions exist.

The difference is that no religion can provide any proof that it can uphold its promise. On the other hand the state of technology at this time does at last show good indications that it will eventually deliver on this desire.

    I live in hope.

    Cris,

You might want to think twice about not paying your taxes - it didn't work for <a href="http://www.nara.gov/exhall/originals/capone.html">Al Capone</a>, and it didn't work for <a href="http://www.taxprophet.com/hot/june98.html">Irwin Schiff</a>, either.

    Sorry!

    Cris,

About the only thing that is truly yours is free will; however, it has limitations too--you are BOUND to this world until death. Nonetheless, you can choose to believe as you wish while you are here.

    Emerald,

Yeah I know and I wasn't serious. I'm not a US citizen yet so taking such actions would seriously jeapordize my hopes. Just trying to tease Bowser.

    Bowser et al -

Here is a good link discussing freedom -
    http://www.positiveatheism.org/writ/cranston11.htm

It pretty much points out that one needs to define what one is free FROM. Without that qualification, as we discovered, saying one is free will meet with confusion.

So am I free from time? No because I am not omniscient.

Am I free from inevitable death? No, not yet. The hope is high but the reality is going to be a long hard fight.

As for free will. I think I am free from being coersed into taking actions that I would not choose. And I think that includes a freedom from non-existent gods who might have pre-determined my future. Some time ago a topic included determinism. That philosophy seems to mitigate against the number of choice I might consider. Ummm, maybe I need to review determinsim again, I see a logic knot approaching.

So, stay free, and enjoy your freedom.

    AUSSIEABORIGINAL,

Mr. Revenuer? I don't suppose it would do me any good to suggest you try making more sense in this incarnation than you did in the last one? No, I didn't think so.

I simply wanted to warn another poster on this board, who I happen to like and respect, that Mr. Irwin Schiff is a criminal who has done time for income tax evasion, just in case he, or anyone else, was unaware of it.

On the other hand, if you wish to give Mr. Schiff's methods a whirl, then by all means - don't let me stop you.
