A hunter aims directly at a target (on the same level) 120 m away.
    (a) If the bullet leaves the gun at a speed of 300 m/s, by how much will it miss the target?
    (b) At what angle should the gun be aimed so the target will be hit?

It says they are on the same level so how do you know it misses the target? Does it miss up, down, left, or right?

What do you know about gravity? What will that do to the bullet?

To a maths teacher, it's obvious that "aims directly at the target" means "points the barrel directly at the target".

To everyone else, it's equally obvious that "aims directly at the target" means aim through sights aligned correctly for the target distance...

Make sure that you answer the question appropriately for your audience.

Gravity will do work on the bullet on the way to the target, so the bullet will fall to the ground (obviously =). The first one should be easy. Your answer will (hopefully) be a distance a. For the next one, make sure that the bullet is aimed to reach a distance -a above the target.

Are u assuming a shot on the moon or is there air resistance? Or is this just a basic 1st year maths problem?!

Probably the basic problem. If you start messing with atmospheric effects, things get very complicated very quickly.

In that case Anders is right

Also, to the math teacher, the bullet and the target are perfect mathematical points

Q: Why did the chicken cross the road?

Math teacher: "First, assume a spherical chicken..."
