Problem with quoting replies

Is there a work around for quoting replies? Several times I have found the reply gets automatically messed up by the system throwing in extra QUOTE (with the [] ).

At the moment I am physically typing in the quote BB code but it doesn't seem to always work.

Is there some shortcut or work around?

Pethaps this issue has already been discussed and someone can point me in the right direction.

If you mess up the opening quote, say by dropping a square bracket, it won't recognize it.
If you mess up the closing quote, it won't recognize it, and then will add its own.
Whenever I'm manually inserting quotes, I always double-check that the quotes are correct.
You can always repair quotes manually.
