Linda is experiencing time in a non-chronological order, like pages or chapters of a book that have been disarranged from their usual 1-2-3 sequence. On some occasions it is when Jim is still alive and other times it is after he died. She can't prevent him from dying because: (1) He doesn't believe her prediction of his impending accident ("It was just a dream.") (2) While trying to warn him over the phone to avoid a truck (as he is driving), Linda literally causes the traffic accident that kills Jim.
