At the least, citizens must pass a general aptitude test before voting.

During the last election Howard Stern sent out a interview team to the streets of Harlem, where they asked black voters to identify Obama's specific policies.

Almost none of them could do it...but they were all voting for the black guy.

Yes, and tax them if you must. Better to have them all out in the open and empty the prisons of 'moral criminals'. The government should not be in the business of proscribing peoples morals.

Im an Australian and as such have always wondered why you in the US have such a fear of socialist points of view. Do as we do, free health care, compulsory voting, ban guns, show a little tolerance to drug users, and spend less tax money on wars and your military.

Your government acts like a child fearful that someone will take from you your liberty and oh so marginal freedom. Some nations have been burnt to the ground with millions of lives lost. They get on fine without a need to wage constant war.

Do small countries like Australia have to have US forces, with there nuclear sabers parked off our shores and orbiting above our heads..

Get rid of your fear America and have countless billions to improve your society.. You spent $1.128 trillion on the war against terror 9/11 killed just over 3000 people. Yet you allow a horrific killer of more the 300thousand in ten years in your streets and homes. Your fucking crazy, hope your fear bankrupts you and the rest of the world can sleep a little easier with out your massive stock of WMD's

    That's key.

To improve America, there needs to be more riots.

Contract the Chinese CCP to govern the USA but with the contract, deny them the right to in any new way to restrict the press or peaceful public speech.

Great link. Thanks. This sentence sums up / illustrates well / the imbalance in US's international efforts:

"U.S. military now has more people in its marching bands than the State Department has in its foreign service — and that’s preposterous."

but fact that US spends 6 times more than #2 (China) and essentially equal to what all world's countries combined do, adds some facts as to how "preposterous."

We could cut the military budget by 2/3 and still spend twice as much on military expenses as any other nation with several times (6 times?) more being spent on technology than China as its second place expenses are mainly due to its large army.

When Gen, then president, Eisenhower gave his final message to the nation, he coined the phrase "military-industrial complex" and warned it was a great danger to the US. We have not headed that warning and it is bankrupting the nation, instead of defending it (but contractors are getting rich at tax payer expense so can afford great expenses lobbying Congress).

I just put a link to this post in my old thread: "How DUMB can US Voters Be?"

PS: I had not read the full article when I posted the above, but now I have and for first time learned that Eisenhower also said:
"... Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies, in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed. ..."

That and above facts about how much the US spends on the military not only show how dumb the US (and its voters) is, but also that its morality is the morality of money.

NYTimes article of Kennyc's link concludes with:

"... “Leading through civilian power saves lives and money,” Mrs. Clinton noted, and she’s exactly right. The review is a great document, but we’ll see if it can be implemented — especially because House Republicans are proposing cuts in the State Department budget.

They should remind themselves that in the 21st century, our government can protect its citizens in many ways: financing research against disease, providing early childhood programs that reduce crime later, boosting support for community colleges, investing in diplomacy that prevents costly wars. As we cut budgets, let’s remember that these steps would, on balance, do far more for the security of Americans than a military base in Germany. ..."

Billy T comment:Or the military's marching bands, which have more people than the state department has in foreign service. With Republicans (favored by defense contractors for obvious reasons) gaining more control of Congress, one can be sure this bi-partisan stupidity will continue. American voters are unbelievable DUMB. For other examples see thread "How DUMB can US Voters Be?" the OP of which is now at: http://www.sciforums.com/showpost.php?p=1076237&postcount=15 but many other examples are given in that thread which started back in 2006 with US policy / expenses on corn based alcohol.

A little correction Cosmic. Socialism did not harm Italy, Spain or Greece. Incompetence and fiscal irresponsibility harmed those countries. The same kind of fiscal incompetence that has been seen in the US under Republican government since 2000.

There are many other countries who you and other conservatives would call socialist that are doing just fine (e.g. Australia, Sweden, Norway, and Germany).

I would bet that those 3 month paid vacations folks over there enjoy so much don't help those financial matters very much either.

I thought that phrase was from C. Wright Mills' "The Power Elite", coined to describe the interchangeability of top management in the military, industry and government. Eisenhower was one of his prime examples of that, moving from the military right into top government and then into private industry.
