    Where did the elephant and donkey thing come from. Seem like crazy choices for mascots or something.

    first association of donkey came from Andrew Jackson because he was labeled by his opponent a "jackass" and apparently looked like one...
    the donkey symbol however came in 1874, from the following cartoon remark ""The Democratic party is like a mule--without pride of ancestry or hope of posterity."

    the elephant symbol of the republican party was also doing of a cartoon in 1874 from the same man (Thomas Nast publishing in Harper's Weekly) and was a labeled elephant there with label "The Republican Vote"...this elephant was apparently being scared away by a donkey
