Meaning from EM attacks from Natural and UnNatural sources .

So far only a handful of states have this protection .

    WHY ?

It's time that all states protected their power grid from EM surge.

Northern States, likely have this because they need it for protection against electrical disruption from solar geomagnetic storms:

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/March_1989_geomagnetic_storm

States that are further South are places where the Aurora from a geomagnetic storm may be seen, but it rarely if ever touches the ground the way it can in Canada and some Northern states.

The only other reasons I can think of for installing such protection would be against the effect of electrical storms, or an EM pulse resulting from a nuclear attack or accident. Power companies have opted to let businesses and consumers pay for their own residence or facility surge suppressors to protect against electrical storm or incidental power line interruptions or disturbances, but as far as I am aware, the best protection against EM pulses would be simply to make certain that you are not using equipment that may be damaged by it when the EM pulse hits. The power grid could take care of this contingency in the event of a nuclear emergency, simply by switching the grid off until the attack has ended. Facilities like nuclear power plants would be on their own to put emergency plans into effect.

Electricity power producers are forming an organization to stockpile critical materials for such an event. Granted, they are way behind the 8 ball on this, but better late than never.

Ask yourself how much more you are willing to pay for power to harden the grid against EMP's. The answer will be the same.

Harden the grid against EM Attack? That's a laugh... our (America's) power grid is barely even able to correct for a small scale issue, such as a sub-station going out... hell, sometimes even just a particularly hot summers day is enough to overtax the thing!

That makes this even more pressing if one can " laugh " at the situation .

Regardless, a powerful EM ejection by the Sun could devastate many electrical power grids , for years.
