Iran has no interest in biting the hand that feeds them (buys their oil). The US has no interest in starting WWIII with Russia (Iran's ally). I think Iran's boldness is deliberately designed to increase the price of oil and that's all.

Their military is somewhat different than ours. There are factions that act on their own, at least to some degree. It's a tricky situation, but basically things are going great for Iran as far as Iraq is concerned. Saddam, a Sunni, is out, and the Shia have the majority. Are we going to start a nuclear war over the fact that they support Hezbollah? We supported the contras in Nicaragua (by selling arms to Iran), and various coups that were supposedly in our interest...
