    Agreed. It would take billions before they were self-sufficient.
    There is more oxygen than we could ever use bound up in CO2.
    "More than five million cubic kilometers of ice have been identified at or near the surface of modern Mars, enough to cover the whole planet to a depth of 35 meters."
    Enough to supply oxygen (for people) carbon dioxide (for plants) raw material for fuel and friction for braking.
    Dirt is pretty good at that.
    Probably true. But that's fine - it can take decades.
