On what grounds did Thorne win his bet against Hawking re the theoretical application of naked singularities?
They actually seem rather absurd from my point of view.

The original bet was whether naked singularities can exist or not. Hawking conceded after realising they could theoretically exist in contrived ('non-generic') conditions. They also had another bet on whether they could exist in generic conditions, and a bet on whether information is lost in a black hole.
I don't recall a bet on the theoretical application of naked singularities.
