Language. It allowed us to communicate and cooperate with each other effectively.

Those Segway's on loan to the Atlantis Police Department were all returned. There was no mention of purchasing any.

Segway's will never replace the foot. No matter what the inventor would like for you to believe.

The printing press and reusable type were actual inventions that helped spread and preserve knowledge. Langauge was not invented. Writing probably evolved, rather than someone sitting down and inventing an alphabet or suchlike.

I vote for language. Sure, you might say it evolved, but I'm sure sometimes people have sat down and agreed on the precise words to use in the upcoming hunt, fight, or ceromony, thus making language an artifact.

Fire was also important, and the taming and use of fire surely count as an invention, after all, most inventions involve the taming and use of some natural phenomenon.

Writing was important, but you might argue that it is merely a further developement of language.

It's a bit dull and boring but nobody has mentioned the wheel yet?

    That, or maybe religion
