    1. "Professional" is not the proper term.

    2. Then, the standards would generally be composed of the average bias of the board over which they moderate.
Thus, you could expect a science board to have biases towards scientific discussion.
Of course, sciforums is more complicated than that, thus the variety of biases prevalent among the mods (which reflect the member).

    why not?
but aside from standards of topic (which is obvious) what do you make of standards for "being a mod"?
why would the phrase "professional standards regarding bias for moderation" sound like a misnomer to you?

    Gee.
    I wonder why?
    http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=Professional

Because you don't study to become a moderator. Because there are no universal standards on which slant any particular forum should take.

Like I said, different forums, different players, different biases.

Go to a Muslim board and post a cartoon of Mohammed and see how far you get.

thats not pertinent to the 3rd or 13th definition of your link

    3. appropriate to a profession: professional objectivity.
    13. a person who is expert at his or her work: You can tell by her comments that this editor is a real professional.

so there are professional standards (meaning skills base, as opposed to wages or training) for teachers, lawyers, judges, police officers, surf life savers and even hall monitors but for some reason being a mod is just too unfathomably complex to be categorized along side them?

but aside from standards of topic (which is obvious) what do you make of standards for "being a mod"?
why would the phrase "professional standards regarding bias for moderation" sound like a misnomer to you?

    Moderating is not a profession.

What is an expert moderator? Someone who knows their way around the moderator control panel?

There is something that those professions have in common that being a moderator doesn't.
Other than, of course, moderating not being a profession.

You're asking for an answer that doesn't exist. You take the biases of the forum out of the equation and your question becomes nonsense.

    Invert Nexus

yes it is - it just doesn't have a very attractive retirement plan
that and alo someone who knows their way around the issues of moderation too
    and what is that exactly?

who said anything about taking it out?
I am talking about "professional standards regarding bias" (outside of obvious issues of topic)

BTW persons who commonly require skills of moderation in their profession - meaning the trained and waged variety - like judges, counselors or anyone else touching on issues of ethics - commonly get trained to come to a "professional standard" so that their pre-existing biases/judgments don't grossly jeopardize their career. That training usually takes the form of conceding that everyone is judgmental/biased, but a person can consult standard procedures for action and thus act professionally.
This enables counselors to assist people in crisis whom they would normally deem repulsive

If teachers, lawyers, judges, police officers, surf life savers and even hall monitors can deal with issues of bias, it's not clear why you think mod's cannot

Moderators have a tough job and I appreciate what they do. I think this board with one exception, has pretty good moderators. And that one exception may be improving...have not had any recent conflicts of course I kind of stay out of that forum to avoid that mod. When I became a member a few months ago, I was warmly welcomed by string...much appreciated.

If skinwalker is even a little bit like me, then there are about three people whose opinion matters on this forum to him.

    Just a hunch.
