This just goes to show that no stories coming out of that area can be trusted. What a load of tosh.

Ha, turns out the speculation I supported was the right one: http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2007/09/070921-meteor-peru.html

This actually concerned me when i heard of this. For years we have been debating whether or not microbes sent from mars upon comets and very small meteors could contain alien bacteria. We even found possible wormlike structures on a meteorite containing polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, fitting the approximate date of a collision from mars... This mysterious illness may be due to mass-histeria, howsoever, the symptoms appear very geniun. I wonder if the comet had contained within it some kind of poisenous metals, or high concentration of methanes...??? If not, the asteroid itself could have contained something much more hazerdous... Who knows?

Who knows? WE know. It's already been explained - please read a few posts back and you can stop wondering about something that never happened.

it was a meteor that exposed arsenic rich soil...thus all the disease.

Factual error: there was NO disease, it was simple arsenic poisoning.

This landing happened on just about the same day as the tail end of the poisonous meteor story line on the Alley Oop comic strip. That's one reason that I thought it was a hoax.

There is plenty of cyanide about in space which is very poisonous when breathed in as gases from a hot meteor.

Reminds me of a London Fire Brigade incident where there was a suspected leakage of cyanide so the "expert" checked it out by going over and sniffing at the suspected source.

    (rough translation)

“Dr. Thomas Kenkmann and graduate student Michael Poelchau from the museum of natural history at the Humboldt university in Berlin have scientifically documented the meteorite impact, which occurred on 15 September 2007 in Peru near to the Carancas settlement. The meteorite left a crater of nearly 15 m in diameter and about 5 m deep. An enormous pressure wave was released, and earth and rock were hurled over a distance of 200 m.”
