It occurred to me to try and examine, as per John Cleese, what have the Romans ever done for us On March 17, 1845, Stephen Perry of the rubber manufacturing company Messers Perry and Co, Rubber Co Manuf London patented the fist rubber bands made of vulcanized rubber. Perry invented the rubber band to hold papers or envelopes together https://www.versteegde.nl/History_of_Elastic_and_Rubber_Bands.html But I would like to extend this. I offer the rubber band as the first entry. It was a toss of a coin between rubber band and paper clip Rubber band won. Stephen Perry was the inventor I have no idea of the inventors religious beliefs as not given in Wikipedia https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stephen_Perry_(inventor) I, full disclose, SPECULATE, his religion or lack of, did not in any way play a part in the invention of the rubber band It was invented to hold papers or envelopes together. Produced for a practical purpose, I speculate no religion involved Posters are invited to match up a equal to the rubber band in which religion WAS involved I don't mean the inventor was religious I would like to move to increasingly complex items and finish somewhere in the region of Hubble, Moon landing, LHC Match the rubber band is the first step Points to consider One side practicality reality science Other side religion ritual dogma So what has either of the two major humanity divisions given us? Any refinement of the set up of Match Up welcome Cheers
About 2 hours after creating thread I downloaded my local newspaper NT News and found this To good not to post Not really part of match up, but welcome to do so anyways Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image! What have the the Romans ever done for us? is a clue Is another Pare it down to Science gave us the rubber band Match at about the same level Religion gave us (insert a equivalent to rubber band here) Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image!
Then it's hardly a fair question. At least no more fair than "Has science ever attempted to explain what came before Creation?" "Has science ever attempted to explain why we exist and what our purpose is?" Science limits itself to what. Religion explores the why. Two realms. I'm a science guy, but I don't see a lot of point in taking cheap pot shots across the divide. Anyway, since I acknowledge I have nothing constructive to contribute, I will do the courteous thing and not pour more cold water on the subject. Unwatching.
Working on it Not working on it and has never claimed to be doing so Working on answers Well the most common answer (feel free to correct) to live - follow the good book - die - go to heaven - sing praise to the lord forever No science is going to touch that As mentioned Working on it Religion states categorically they have nailed it - god However was not intending to go so deeply into such aspects Was way more mundane A comparison as to a mundane rubber band solving a mundane problem and is there a equivalent mundane task solved by the other realm across the divide Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image!
Kinda my point. It's a highly biased question in favour of what science does. Which is better for catching fish? A trawler or a Corvette?
OK Let's see if I can even it up Religion has given us Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image! Has science given us such a work of art? Does that work for you? Art is unbiased on neutral ground??? Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image!
