Indeed so--the times of low suspot activity would be best--less chance of solar flares while you're on the journey. It's a long time to be in space, because effectively you haven't got any protection from cosmic rays even when you're down on the surface of Mars. That atmosphere is pretty thin.

Oli focus on the thread topic please. Mars and settling on Mars. My approximation is that Russia will lead an international team to Mars on 2030-2040...however by 2050 humans will be on Mars.

The settlements will basically be in what has landed as well as expandable modules...so pretty crampy inside.
