Ok SciForums. I've got an idea, so it's your job as SciForumites to poke holes in it and give me a thoroughly refined version, since I can not find every problem by myself.

    The idea: Local Think Tanks
Description: They would be a "think tank" consisting of 5-50 intelligent members of a community that would, instead of focusing on national issues, focus solely on solving the problems of the community they are based in. Intelligence will be judged by IQ test, personal interview, and a short personality test. The best and brightest of each think tank would eventually be "promoted" to a larger think tank which includes, but is not limited to, more "power", in the sense that they would make more important decisions for their think tank, public recognition, and consultation jobs with local business', among other things. The heirarchy would be set like this:

    Suburbs
    |
    Minor Cities
    |
    Major Cities
    |
    States

The think tanks would focus on "hot-button-problems" such as local pollution, crime prevention, community events, and any other issues that surface.

Also, a small percentage of students would be recruited from, but not limited to, GT (Gifted and Talented) programs, schools (recommendation from teachers are primary source), and other higher learning courses offered in the area.

This group will also focus on the issue of upbringing well-rounded, "Renaissance" people, by working on the issue of reversing popular thought in school that "Smart=Geek" to "Smart=Cool". Once peer pressure is reversed, there should be a stronger environment towards learning and education.

I understand that this whole plan is very idealistic and up-in-the-cloudsy, but by no means implausible. With your help, hopefully these local think tanks can be birthed and start to do good for our communities, one town at a time. Be as critical as neccessary; I won't be upset with having to revamp the entire idea if need be. Anything you can input will help, from the little details to the glaring mistakes.

I guess it would be sort of a crutch for local governments, as they usually don't do a very good job (at least where I'm from they don't). Everyone can use some help from the brightest in the area.

    exactly

isn't it sad that we are reinventing the idea of government because our real one has gone so far off track that we don't even recognize it?

The problem is that the citizenry doesn't want bright ideas. They want reassurance and short-term thinking. At least in most places in the U.S.

The intellectual revolution is so over.

Hmm. I guess the whole solution would rest on a couple questions:

    a) Why don't citizens want bright ideas
    b) What would bring about another intellectual revolution

If we discover why citizens don't want bright ideas that, in the long run, are much better to them, their standard of living, and their children's standard of living, then we can find a solution. Perhaps you could provide an example of citizens not wanting better futures?

Everything is a cycle. We will have another intellectual revolution when we have to have another one. Not before. Humans are very bad about not doing anything they don't have to do. Someday, this is going to end us.

Basically replacing (or augmenting) elected governments by high-IQ governments? Interesting idea, but it'll be impacted by any and all difficulties in measuring intelligence ... and some would call it elitism.

What the hell do you mean by that? I'm not even old enough to get a job, you ass wagon, so I earn what I can however I can. I'm willing to work as hard as anybody to get something done, and I apply myself to whatever the hell I deem necessary.

And by the way, this is the first thread of this nature I've posted in my entire membership. No need to be upset because I called you a penis fat.

Anyway, yeah, I guess this is kind of a form of elitism. Someone intelligent would have to make the judgement call on who is intelligent and who isn't, so that could be a problem.

Also, would you not agree that now is as good a time as ever to have an Intellectual Revolution in America?

By the way, when was the last one?

If people wanted intelligent solutions to real problems, they would vote that way.

Yes the Intellectual Revolution (first one, as far as I am concerned) is certainly long over due.

Are you saying that it will help in the sense that people will want to eventually strive to learn more and take education more seriously or they want to grow up and hopefully be a part/member of the Think Tank? Whatever happened to wanting to become an Astronaut or Spiderman?

I don’t know what school you go to but my school and the schools in my area there is no stereotype where "smart=geek" that’s overused and outdated. The only way peer pressure works is if you feel so insecure about yourself you think you need to fit in and be just like the mass of the people.

    Oh dear

one is assuming Amish that those with higher IQ make better descisions than the lesser so???? Nooooooo, My experience is that the greater the IQ the less social and interpersonal skills and most importantly the less common sense!!!!!!!!!

You would ideally need a balance of people from different walks of life with differing skills, so as to bring a balanced view.
