http://www.huffingtonpost.com/johann-hari/the-real-cause-of-addicti_b_6506936.html This... is quite interesting, but it makes sense in a way - the human mind is incredibly powerful... if a person is convinced they NEED something to continue on... then they will, inevitably, end up "needing" it... Yet if they can be happy and content without it, then there is no "need" for it. I would guess this explains psychological dependence... but isn't there still the issue of physiological dependence? The article is too long to post here (bloody character limit) but a fascinating read!
However certain drugs will make people addicts because of their powerful addictive chemical make ups. You are right that people who need something often times need it because they get into a habit of doing whatever it is they enjoy doing to satisfy their needs.
*nods* It's an interesting find... the idea that psychological addiction could be broken simply by removing the supposed need for the escape... but then again, in a way it makes sense I guess - someone who is content with life probably isn't going to go out and try to find something to make them forget about it XD
