    The impetus for change is always survival and perpetuation of the specis. That is why you see Latin American women illegally enter USA with great peril.

    I agree that we are all constantly adapting. My point is that Kurzweil neglects to factor in that the impetus for such a radical adaptation as the singularity would have to be some as-yet unpredicted threat to the survival of the species; nevermind the economic and technical obstacles to maintaining the constant acceleration of development, or even the high degree of subjectivity with which "development" is judged. It's a very weak argument, and there are plenty of reasons to disagree with it.

    No, a CD and a record both serve the same function, which is how technology is usually classified. They are quite similar in their purpose; the details of their operation are irrelevant when considering their purpose.
