    I stand firm:

How can a self-respecting man possibly live without listening to "Britanny Spears" and 50 Cent?

I'm leery about providing direct access to my computer via DC. How safe is it? How does it work? Does it search various machines for a specific filename, type, or description? Or do you have to browse individual machines? I briefly checked out the DC++ site, but didn't do any indepth research into it.

DC++ is very safe. It's a free open source application, so the code is available to anyone for review or modification. And the programs on there only rarely have any viruses.
The way it works, is you download a hublist, (there's a default URL for one) which has a list of hubs you can connect to. Once connected to a hub, you can search for files that any of the other users in the hub have in their share. You can also download the file list of any user in the hub to see what's in their share. You can specify several options in a search such as file type, file size, TTH (a file hash). You can also join multiple hubs at a time.
A great thing about DC is the way the system is designed. It promotes file sharing because in order to get into the better hubs you have to share a certain minimum amount. The more you share the better the hubs you can join.
Also, DC++ has given me the fastest download speeds of any filesharing app.

[Devil'sAdvocatePositionJustForFun]To all of you, I offer a groundbreaking, brilliant, never-before-thought-of solution.

Go get a highpowered, highpaying job. Then buy all the music you want.

All this downloading is for cheapskates who can't afford the real thing. Who cares about the RIAA campaign? Who cares if the RIAA will begin to spy on you or if they raise their prices?

If you've got plenty of money to spend, it won't matter to you. If you're an honest citizen, all the spying won't matter to you. You've got nothing dishonest to hide. All this paranoia about privacy is for people who've got dirty things to hide, and that's pathetic. Grow up.

I have a firewall running all the time, and it doesn´t hamper Kazaa in any way.
Perhaps you should try reinstalling the program? If that doesn´t help, perhaps you got and anti-virus programm that causes problems. Otherwise, I don´t know.

Don't get KaZaA. Try Limewire. (do a google search) It has better download speeds, no spyware, it's 20 x better than KaZaA.

Kazaa Lite has no spyware, repeat, Kazaa Lite has no spyware. I don't use it though and I abandoned Limewire a while back due to the limited results. Shareaza seems to give me best results, same network as Limewire and more, right now. I am investigating DC++. The whole concept of the Direct Connect Network is interesting. So far, from what I see, DC++ does not seem as straight forward or easy at finding files than most other P2P sharing apps. Maybe I just got to get used to this logging into nodes stuff.

I used to use Norton apps religiously for many years from my first 4.77 mHz pc back there in the eighties (a couple of hundred years ago) but I now find it to have too many tentacles and potential snafus. For antivirus I use Avast and have been quite happy with it for a couple of years now. Zapped a trojan horse just the other day.

Hey Southstar, if you are going to praise Britney Spears, you might start with spelling her name right

Heck, use google if you want some wait states. I go to http://www.download.com or http://www.simtel.net/welcome.php Just did a search at the last for P2P and downloaded Zultrax. What a burgeoning field. RIAA might just as well try to stop the earth from orbiting.

Poor Britney. What's a blond gotta do to earn a whole shit load of bucks nowadays?

    Here is the problem...

Used to be that KaZaa lite actually was KaZaa lite and had no Spyware, or adware (and was FREE) - only KaZaa and RIAA caught on to the hacked program, so now their are a bagillion sites offering a version of "KaZaa lite" that have and have no adware... most free versions of "Lite" now have adware/spyware regardless of the "lite" tag. The other versions cost money...

It is almost impossible to find a true hacked KaZaa Lite...

Well, used to be, here's a link y'all:

    Almost Legal German Site

This version of KaZaa is the true adware/spyware free version... it uses a huge network (connecting both the KaZaa and Gnutella networks). It features an IP blocker updater that prevents the RIAA from spying on you - although I'm sure the government has their ways, so don't be so sure.

This version of KaZaa is IT!!! Only, because their are so many friggin users and the database is so huge (you can download just about anything), you are opening your PC up to a wide variety of viruses... especially if your DL a lot of Porn or software...

    ---

Unless you are familiar with viruses and hacker tricks, this version is especially dangerous and I wouldn't suggest using it...

Buying music is definately the way to go, if you can afford it. You can be safe that way... All illegal file sharing programs are extremely dangerous... the bigger the network, the more un-monitored it is... hense the large selection of viruses.

I'm looking into a cheap legal way to get music from the web where I don't have to worry about being busted - only music download sites rarely offer the file sharing abilities that KaZaa and other programs flaunt.... Such as the ability to get out-of-date tunes, videos, and e-books.

Eventually someone will figure out a way to make everyone happy.
