I'm no expert, just an interested spectator, but I'll try. The order of play is to sink a red ball, then, and only then, you have to sink a color to set up your next shot at a red. If you don't have a good shot, the best idea is to hide the cue ball behind a color to prevent your opponent from making a shot. This video really aptly illustrates a clusterfuck.
