Question : Does ISM protect terrorists?

Answer : Those who wish to silence our voices have accused the ISM of “harboring and protecting terrorists.” The problem is that Israel’s tactic has been to make every Palestinian man, woman and child out to be a suspected “terrorist.” It is the Israeli government’s justification for the brutal force it has been using against a largely unarmed population. It is the rationale for using wide forms of collective punishment, for keeping Palestinians locked up in their towns and villages, and for stripping a people of their human rights. The ISM supports Palestinian communities in protesting collective punishments such as checkpoints, roadblocks, massive round-ups, curfews and home demolitions, and encourages popular nonviolent actions against them. For this reason, we are accused of “protecting terrorists.” On March 16, 2003, our colleague, 23-year-old US citizen, Rachel Corrie, a 23 year old US citizen, was run-over by an Israeli driven Caterpillar bulldozer as she was protesting the demolition of a Palestinian doctor’s home in the city of Rafah in the Gaza Strip (see: Rachel Corrie Web ). She has been accused of trying to protect terrorists and blamed for her own death by the Israeli military and those that work to dehumanize Palestinians.

On April 11, 2003, our colleague, Thomas Hurndall, a 21 year old British national, was shot in the head by an Israeli sniper as he was shepherding young Palestinian children out of the line of Israeli fire in Rafah of the Gaza Strip (see: Tom Hurndall Web ). The Israeli military accused Tom of being dressed in military fatigues and shooting at them, much the same way that they accuse almost every Palestinian civilian that they kill of being armed and dangerous, even stone-throwing kids. Due to heavy pressure applied by the Hurndall family, with the support of the British government, the truth is beginning to come out in Tom’s case. Unfortunately, with the international community silent, Palestinians don’t have anyone to hold Israel accountable for their injuries, and deaths, and abuses of their human rights.

There are two specific incidents which are often cited by Israeli military propagandists to discredit the ISM:

1) The arrest of Shadi Sukia.

2) The visit paid to the ISM by two British citizens who later carried out an attack in Tel Aviv.

The first incident occurred on March 27th 2003, when 23 year old Palestinian, Shadi Sukiya, was invited into the ISM office in Jenin. The ISM members present were worried about him – it was the middle of the night, Jenin was under military curfew, and Sukiya showed up soaking wet, shivering, and looking terrified. The ISM members present didn't speak Arabic, Sukiya spoke no English. He was given a change of clothes, a hot drink and a blanket. Soon afterwards Israeli soldiers entered the building and arrested Sukiya. In briefings made to the Associated Press, the Israeli military claimed that Sukiya was senior member of the Islamic Jihad, a pistol had been discovered in the ISM office and that two ISM volunteers were hiding Sukiya.

When asked for proof of these allegations, the Army changed its story: "The information originally released was wrong" said an Israeli military spokeswoman and it was now "unclear" where the pistol had been found. Somewhat chastened, the Associated Press, which had originally run the story published a retraction on March 29th 2003, entitled "Army backtracks on details about militant arrest at International Solidarity Movement." At present (February 2004) nearly 10 months after his arrest, Shadi Sukiya is in administrative detention, and has still not been charged with any offense.

The second incident occurred on Friday 25th April 2003 when the ISM held an open air memorial service for Rachel Corrie, an American ISM volunteer crushed to death by an Israeli military bulldozer. About 15 minutes prior to the service, two young British Muslims, Asif Hanif and Omar Khan Sharif turned up at the ISM apartment along with a group of four British citizens from London who were looking to prepare a summer camp in Gaza in conjunction with local Palestinians from Rafah, three Italians, and some other people. The ISM group of five people offered the visitors tea, and about 15 minutes later everyone left to attend the service (anyone was free to come and pay their respects). Hanif and Sharif were a quiet pair, and said little except to claim that they were "alternative tourists." A few minutes after the service began, the Israeli military appeared in the form of a tank which used smoke and gas to scatter the mourners. Hanif and Sharif ran away and were not seen by anyone in the ISM again.

Subsequently the two were found to be suicide bombers - their entire association with ISM had been for less than an hour. Before attending the service, the two had never made contact with the ISM, never registered to join us and never attended our mandatory training and orientation.

The claim that the International Solidarity Movement protects terrorists is ridiculous and is only propagated by those who seek to discredit the message of thousands of principled volunteers from around the world who are bearing witness to the cruelty of occupation and working non-violently to end it. Indeed it one of a series of claims follows in a line of attempts used to attempt to discredit ISM volunteers. The, unfounded and often contradictory accusations ranging in scope from ISMers are “paid professionals”, to “ISMers are “ignorant and naïve trouble-making kids”. On the contrary, international ISM international volunteers range in age from 18 (minimum age requirement) to 78 years of age, and come from diverse religious and socio-economic backgrounds. We’ve been joined by mothers, grandmothers, doctors, lawyers, students, school teachers, professors, farmers, laborers, musicians, parliamentarians; we’re black, white, conservatives, liberals, Christians, Muslims, Jews, Buddhists… Please see our section on ‘Meet the Activists.’

Thanks M-16 that gives me hope that a one state solution is actually possible, the vast majority of Israeli’s and a majority of Palestinians don’t want violence what they want is to live in peaceful societies.
