if we gained anything from the military dictatoship, it was that outburst of geniousness that came from wanting to say things and not being able to one of my favourite songs from that time is Cálice by Chico Buarque de Holanda... they lyrics go: Pai, afasta de mim este cálice Afasta de mim este cálice Afasta de mim este cálice De vinho tinto de sangue which in english is: Father, take this cup from me Take this cup from me Take this cup from me Of blood stained wine That is a piece of Jesus' prayer in the mount of Olives "Father, if thou be willing, take this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done." but cálice in portuguese has the same pronouce as cale-se (shut up) It's a very strong melody also
I agree, analbeads, Hooverphonic is good shit. They're really getting quite popular in the US now. For example, about a month ago, I was playing GTA: San Andreas and heard Hooverphonic's 'Too Wicky' mixed in a rap song while changing the radio stations in my 'Pimp-mobile' as I chauffeured whores around San Fiero. Then I heard another one of their songs in a cell phone commercial.
Here's a fatty list: Decemeberists They have some good songs, and obsession with a maritime Imperial Britain. Quite indie. Blood Brothers They make a lot of noise (screaming, mostly), though their latest album, Crimes, is pretty easy to listen to. By far, it's their most accessible album. Love Rhymes with Hideous Car Wreck may be their best song off that album (though my favorite is Celebrator). But if anyone asks you if you listen to the Blood Brothers, say you listen to their older stuff. Your favorite album should be March on, Electric Children. Otherwise, you'll lose scene points. A.C. Newman This guy was/is in the New Pornographers, but then decided to do a solo album titled The Slow Wonder. Catchy tunes, but not pop-catchy. Iron & Wine A band of one. Very talented guy, though. Really mellow, sot of folky. He's the guy who does the Such Great Heights cover for that M&M's commercial. I think just about anyone in would like the album Our Endless Numbered Days. The Faint Another hipster band. This is indie dance music. An oxymoron, yes, but catchy none-the-less. Look into the album Danse Macabre. Death From Above 1979 Two member band, but sounds much bigger. I think it's a keyboard and bassist. It's sorta punk, sorta rock, pretty noisy. The song Black History Month, definitely worth getting. The best of their stuff, easily. Mcluksy These guys sound much like the Pixies. It's worth it to listen to em just for that. I recommend the songs Lightsabre Cocksucking Blues and Alan is a Cowyboy Killer, though anything off their album Mclusky Do Dallas is good (if you like bands that sound like the Pixies). Silversun Pickups Very quiet band with a lead singer that sounds like a girl. Borderline emo (mopey emo, not 80s emo), but the songs are too... thoughtful to be considered emo, and they don't shriek nearly at all.
Roman, I happened to see the Blood Brothers when they were on tour with Coheed and Cambria last fall, and they are absolutely amazing. Listening to their stuff pre-show took a while for me to get into, but once I did I was hooked. I think of their stuff, Cecilia is my favourite song. But, I like a lot of their music and, like I said, incredible live show. *edit* Another good band that was on that tour I was referring to earlier: Dredg. That guy is an amazing singer. His voice is crystal clear in the live show, which is a difficult thing to accomplish. Another band that is just gaining a lot of popularity now that I should recommend is Thrice. Very odd, and complex, but very cool if you can appreciate what they are attempting.
Oh, I'm jealous. I'd love to see them live. Ambulance vs. Ambulance would be my favorite. My favorite thing about the Blood Brothers are their lyrics, honestly. So creative, great imagery. It's a shame you can't understand most of em.
Haha, I know what you mean. They have a very interesting dynamic between the two vocalists as well. Oh! And another band that many of you Americans likely haven't heard of is Moneen. Their live show is the most intense I have ever witnessed. Their music isn't really conducive to rocking out, you wouldn't think, but they rock out harder than any other band I have ever seen.
music that never gets played much on radio..... Depth Charge, Melt Bannana, Enviromental Science (check out their track "The day the zag stood still." classic)Used and Abused records, The Operation, Attica Blues Mo Wax records, Ramus on Bolshi records. Anything on Ninja Tune records. Although I heard all of that late night/early morning on Radio one(England.) so its not nessesarily that rare. that reminds me also....Rare force on skint records. And saying Radiohead can't be that wrong I hadden't heard half of Kid A or Amesiac before I got them.
I keep up with tour dates enough to know your band name if you will do so much as name your band for me in reply. I am interested to know.
