Heh: I may have been posted only an hour ago before I saw it.

    The speculations are endless.

True. I.m usually a Silent Pur myself. I do not say things:"Oh God. Don't stop!". Unless I'm affected by certain chemical reactions that is.[/I]

I'm not totally a specialist, but there's about 1 million eggs per uterus on the fucking and they have to come out with friction.

I forget what I first wanted to post

I've been reading stuff on UFOs since I was about 7 years old.

When I started, I didn't have the critical thinking skills required to tell the difference between good evidence and speculative fantasy, but I had certainly acquired them by the time I was 20 years old.

I appreciate that some people never get that far.

Hmm, do you consider all claims of alien UFO’s to be “speculative fantasy?” Like...purposeful? lol

I think many claims are fantasy, but some give me pause - like the “tic tac” sighting, although in a way, it’s scarier to think that another country may have developed far advanced technology. I don’t think the tic tac video can be explained as anything other than a UFO, but what type is the question, imo.

It's curious to me that you say you critically thought yourself out of your former ufo beliefs. What line of thinking persuaded you that all ufos can be explained away with merely speculative mundane or natural causes? What rule of logic convinced you that every ufo account was and always will be erroneous or a hoax?

I am convinced that the "tic tac" witnessed by multiple pilots and captured on video and radar is something not of this world in that it shows traits our science and technology aren't even capable of yet. These include anti-gravity flight, supersonic speeds without sounds, and a robust tolerance for sudden high intensity g forces.

In my studies of ufo accounts over the years many stand out as exceptional and very compelling. The ufo sighting and chase by the Iranian military circa 1976 is one such persuasive case:

I am not sure how you got that from what James R said.

What I see is "... the difference between good evidence and speculative fantasy...".

    And yet you saw
"all ufos can be explained away" and
    "every ufo account" and
"was and always will be erroneous or a hoax".

It's just a few questions meant for James R. I'm not saying anything. If I am making unwarranted assumptions then that's my bad and I apologize.

    wegs:

Not initially. There's no way to know whether a claim is a fantasy or a reality until we look at the evidence.

However, it's worth keeping in mind that the people who claim that aliens are visiting Earth have now had more than 70 years to present good evidence for that particular claim, and they've come up with nothing that can withstand a modicum of critical examination in all that time.

That doesn't mean, of course, that somebody won't present really convincing evidence of alien visitation tomorrow. It could happen, but the chances aren't looking good, based on the last 70 year history of such claims.
Some of it is purposeful, of course. There's some money to be made from boosting UFOs. Some people manage to make a comfortable living out of promoting alien spacecraft etc. Look, for instance, of the huge amount of pseudo-documentary TV shows that the US, in particular, continually churns out. Somebody buys that stuff and puts it on the networks.

"Scary" is one of the key things that the UFO crowd increasingly depend on. Because so many of them are conspiracy theorists as well being UFO believers, the smarter ones recognise the power of fear to encourage and maintain dubious beliefs.

There's currently way too much fear about all kinds of things right now, especially in the United States. The trick is to sort out which fears are legitimate and which are spurious - driven by people who have vested interests in stoking the fear. Again, the solution is critical thinking: people need a certain skill set to be able to sort out truth from baloney. They also need, to some extent, to be able to recognise actual expertise and to distinguish it from such things as bluster and empty claims to authority.

The "U" in UFO or UAP means unidentified. It's nothing more than a place holder for "we don't know what this is, yet".

There's no problem with not having all the answers. The problem lies in pretending to have all the answers when really you don't.

You're mistaken. I have never been persuaded that all UFOs can be "explained away". It is actually UFO True Believers like yourself who think that most UFOs can be "explained away" as [*insert preferred woo here]. You disagree amongst yourselves as to what your various preferred explanatory woo is, of course. Q-reeus thinks a lot of UFOs are ghosts from other dimensions (correction before he explodes again - beings masquerading as ghosts (as if that makes any practical difference)). I've forgotten exactly what your preferred explanation is, because it doesn't much matter; you've never tried to support it, as far as I'm aware.

What I do know is that many UFO sightings have been explained (convincingly) with reference to mundane causes, despite ongoing denial by people such as yourself. On the other hand, as mentioned above, you guys have a track record of zero convincing proofs of your woo claims.

Again, you don't understand what critical thinking means. It doesn't mean jumping to conclusions before you have examined the evidence. That's precisely the kind of thinking that got you into the mess you're in.

I never start by assuming that any given UFO account is erroneous or a hoax. You're blaming the wrong person if you want to complain about the fact that so many UFO reports do turn out to be erroneous and/or hoaxes after just a little examination. You should be out there demanding higher standards (and more moral behaviour) from your fellow True Believers.

Your threshold bar for being convinced about most woo is set approximately at floor level. No need to leap high to convince you.
Most purported evidence for such things is anecdotal and/or otherwise weak.

Claiming the moral high ground? While denigrating opponents with automatic 'woo' labels and worse.
Who, unlike JR, judge testimony from e.g. Fravor and Dietrich as highly reliable. And much else besides covered in many posts here.
Empty hand-waving dismissals, or disingenuous leading questions (James R's 'specialty'), the usual fare from SF debunker crew.
An intentionally provocative, baiting as usual backhander lie, then a contrived 'correction' that is still a baiting lie, but one of omission.

Again, my (recent, multiple listed, p259 #5170. ) true position re 'ghosts' from 'other dimensions' {implying some form of speculative but just physical realm theory e.g. various string theories} or not:

    http://www.sciforums.com/threads/in-defence-of-space-aliens.160045/page-259#post-3683404

    And:

And, in some detail further back:

    http://www.sciforums.com/posts/3581191

    And likewise, further back again:

    http://www.sciforums.com/posts/3506955/

My stated position has been consistent, though with varying expansiveness, across that lengthy span of posts.

James R would characteristically choose to label above as another 'explosion'. Just like my last alleged 'explosion' here wasn't any such thing.

So much for James R's self-proclaimed self-righteous adherence to 'critical thinking'. Or any real ethics and morality. A bad joke.
James R; the admin level mod, and as evidenced here and elsewhere, a compulsive troll. All rolled into one ugly, persistent package.

Henceforth (sans a contrived life ban, or malicious deletion) this post will be a go-to reference.
In the inevitable event James R or his fellow 'debunker' cronies/trolls continue to knowingly misrepresent my UFO/UAP/etc. position.
One of the usual stupid and unethical tactics they untiringly enjoy engaging in.
