Then you have must of forgotten Iran Air Flight 655 that was shot down by the USS Vincennes . Iran Air Flight 655 was a civilian airliner shot down by US missiles on Sunday July 3, 1988 over the Strait of Hormuz killing 290 Iranian civilians . The US claimed it was mistaken for a combat aircraft , the entire crew of the USS Vincennes were awarded medals for valour .

Maybe the Iranians just wanted those US ships to stay away from their civilian airports ?

Whereas, American military forces were directly responsible for the downing of the Iran Air flight.
