If an insurance company covers a pre-existing condition, is it really insurance?

    I understand that. But people have lost sight of the fact that healthcare is the goal - not health insurance. And the insurance companies want to keep it that way, because they are making a tidy little profit by being the middlemen.

    It seems to me that in order to have successful universal health care, the middlemen (insurance companies) have to be removed. Single payer.

    Yes they do. Single payers systems are the best and the least costly. Single payers systems are the antithesis of the current monopolistic US healthcare system.
