you know I was going to write something long and intellegent but I desided that this topic is crazy, but so am I. Before I thought carrot, I thought there is no such thing as vegetable its only a cookers term taking from the separate catagories of fruits and herbs. Creating some weird confusing mix of humanities incoherence to accept, or the equivalent of America refusing to standardize and the metric system.

after which I thought carrot. It had nothing to do with 6, and had everything to do with "think of a vegetable".

    PΛRΛDIGM : it's a berry

The sound of 'SIX' verbally has none of the sounds used to say 'carrot' - this may amplify the effect. In a directly social situation this is the most common answer also possibly because this is the most reasonable, plain and simple vegetable to most peoples knowledge, any others are leafy, small and numerous, dirty/messy and other obscurities that make them more difficult to recall quickly. For example try and think of a list of 5 vegetables then try and think of a list of 5 fruits - fruit is easier, yeah?

What is funny, reading the responses, is that I first thought cucumber, but as I was thinking it I said to myself "that can't be right", and changed my mind - to... carrot. I cheated my way into normalcy at the last millisecond. How strange.

Me too. I thought of a cabbage at first and then I felt a sudden compulsion that I was being tricked, so I said carrot.

    Damn your mind games boy!

    Good one! Keep em coming.

    EDIT: Hey cole_grey,

I just realized something. I thought of cabbage. You thought of cucumber. We both thought of carrot.

Are you noticing that they all began with 'c'? Maybe that's unrelated but it's interesting.

EDIT: Did you notice that MacM thought of corn as well?

    Do you c a 'c' pattern happening?

Someone probably thought of celery, I bet.

The thing started back in May when BigBlue brought up celery.

It is present in the collective subconscious of Sciforums since then.
There was a thing for mind reading back then, and it sure read our minds ...

I accidently read the last bit of the this thread, so I said to myself "think of any vegetable but celery!" but I thought celery.
I almost committed to lettuce, but panicked and picked celery.
It turns out I still lost, cause I was supposed to say carrot.

    Southstar,

    It actually makes sense.

    Six,six,six,six,six,six...

You have to be thinking the sound "s", or "k".

it made even more sense after i knew you said cabbage then carrot.

There is a song about this - you say tomato, I say carrot. You say potato, i say carrot,
    tomato, carrot, potato, carrot.

When you hear what they could have sung, it makes you appreciate a decent sounding lyric.

The reason most people probably thought of a vegetable beginning with 'c' is that a LOT of the popular vegetables start with 'c' (cucumber, carrot, corn, celery, cabbage)- so you already have a tenous association between the letter 'c' and vegetables. I would be interested to know if looking at a list of 'c' words and then being asked to think of a food category would equal a lot of people thinking about vegetables.

Somebody should try this poll again with the number five or something. I bet the results are about the same.

Actually I first thought of a banana. Then I thought: That's not a vegetable.

So I came up with tomatoe. Now that I type this I recall hearing tomatoes were fruits. I still think it's a vegetable. To hell with science. Fruits have to be sweet.
