This was what I was trying to tease out of your original post. You came asking about a new OS, when you are really trying to get a DSL connection working. While it is very unreliable and outdated OS, Win ME should have no problem handling a DSL internet connection. I had a co-worker who upgraded to cable internet from dial up. The tech they sent to his home told him he needed a new computer because his old machine had Windows 98. The real problem was that it didn't have a Network Interface Card, and their standard workaround for that was to use a USB port. But the software they used for USB networking didn't work with 98, so they told him to buy a new computer. I came over with a spare NIC, and had it up and running in about ten minutes.

So what is the specific issue you are trying to deal with?

Hey that was a nice post...
Well. I am looking for a way in specific, to find out, how DSL would run and, as you say clearly, your friend or you yourself, say that, ................................... Basically you believe it will run on windows ME; my opinion is that it doesn't. I will try right now. And see what happens.

So I am running an unsupported operating system.

I guess, I need a new operating system.
    Not to mention some of the other things I've said... hmmm.... Like, apparently SP4 is only for windows 2000 and ME is not 2000;
Um, how can I get a dsl uh, shit...

How would I use get then Windows 2000 or Xp or Vista; I think, some one else already offered these things.

    A link for example.
    To.
    A download for Windows Vista,

But I need a clean CD to do this. Perhaps not. And I guess that's all I really need?

The operating system is also useful for other things though, too...

All this just to install a piece of AT&T software that you don't need...........

So ---- uh----- what is the model number for the modem AT&T provided to you?
    Example: Westell 2100
You should be able to plug your computer into the modem (Via an ethernet cable) plug the rj11 cable from the modem to the phone jack, and manually configure the modem by logging into it using Internet Explorer.

Well. I guess ... hmm I like my dsl. With it I'll be able to do many things like play an online RPG.. geeze. Downloading is best for me if it can even do anything.
    Anyway.
    Um, so my model?

It is a Motorola. From at&t.

... But first things first buddy.
It has a ethernet cable a dsl cable a power cable and a reset button on the box. It isn't too big and it's silver.

I plugged the green dsl cable into the back of my computer and the phone line into the slot that connects the things. So:

    Green dsl cable
    Phone cable ,
    attached to wall mount thingey.

Green DSL cable attached to dsl box.

Power Cable attached to DSL Box.

    Green cable attached to computer.

Ethernet cable I was told by an idiot friend it isn't worth it. It's only for buisnesses, he says, confidently.

So, your saying I can configure it using the ethernet cable, and not have to install a new ... damn uh, I am hungry as fuck.

    A new interface thing.

Sort of like, for example just getting the dsl connected and configuring it with the internet explorer, browser?

If your machine has a Network Interface Card, that is where you would plug the Ethernet cable. If it does not have one, you need to either get one installed, or remove and replace the entire machine. You do not have the option of using a USB port for a high speed connection with that old of a machine. A NIC is cheap, and very easy to install. If you don't feel confident doing it, a shop should only charge a relatively small fee for doing so.

I guess that perhaps I should maybe, consider the options of:
    no dsl ability
    no dsl ability
    no dsl ability

    A'tal

OK, here is his problem. The ATT CD that came with the DSL modem doesn't support the old OS. So he should install XP. BUT! His computer is so old, that even having DSL he wouldn't get the full benefits of having fast internet. So the best and easiest solution is buy a fucking new computer because yours is OBSOLATE!!!

Computers don't last forever. Even if you buy a cheap one today that still should be good for 5 years, then you can buy another one. End of story....

P.S.: A legal copy of XP cost around $100. You add only $150 and there you go, the price of a cheap computer.

A new 10/100 network card (if he doesn't have one already) will cost him around 10 bucks. A new computer (that's worth anything) will certainly cost him much more than that.

All he needs to do is log in to his modem, and set it up. He will be able to access the internet after he does that.

.........of course, I'm assuming he doesn't have a router or a firewall----- so the minute he clicks the "save settings" button in the modem's configuration page, he's going to get bartmossed by every worm in existence (running ME with no firewall is like trolling a whorehouse without a condom)

Okay so I need a network card right ?
Logging into my modem without a network card is similar to playing with matches when the candy man is on your tale end with a whipping stick saying "oh what the fuck I reckon I would stand for this when the whipping man is on my fucking tale but not when the whipping man is getting killed by the whipping man! Oh shit!"

So yeah this is a good thread I like this forum

I think we established the fact that the OP is pretty much computer illiterate. So:

    1. He still needs a newer OS, most likely XP, because there is no way he can handle any Linux version.
    2. The point of having fast internet is lost if your computer is old. Not to mention if he has to handle files, that computer most likely doesn't even have USB ports.

What is so incredibly bad about buying a new computer in every 6-7 years??? Most household has 2-3 nowadays anyway.

There is always stealing, or going to the library/school when you want to be online.

Look, computers are dirt cheap nowadays. Yours is what? 6-7 years old? It is already obsolate and in 1-2 years you have to buy a new one anyway, so why not just make the purchase now? Then instead of having a crappy online experience, you could actually ENJOY the next 2 years.

You don't have to listen to me, but believe me, porn comes much faster on DSL than on phone modem...
