    Hello.

If heterosexuality is the societal norm, as a growing homosexual, would the person only realise they were so when they first heard the phrase, "gay" and had it explained to them what it meant? To a homosexual being attracted to the same sex must be natural to them. It must only be when they have it explained that they realise what they are.

Why would this be the case? "They" are a part of society and they would realize that they are "different" from the "norms".

If someone is tall, do they not realize that they are tall until someone points this out to them?

It is only the existence of, "short" that defines their, "tallness."

But since they are probably not shut-ins, or raised by wolves, society is full of short people. There is no such thing as shortness not existing, in any realistic society.

I think it is folly to think it happens the same way for everyone.

It dawns on everyone at a different time, in a different way. Some realize it when they are five, some don't realize it unti - well - ever.
It is becoming more and more apparent that sexuality is a spectrum. Hetero is merely the two ends of it. There is a continuum of self-identifications in between. And some that aren't on the spectrum at all (asexuals, for example).

Dave, you raise a good point. It's possible that the OP is a shut-in or was raised by wolves and this point is a sincere one? Otherwise, it strains credulity.

I mean, I get where he's coming from - someone's sexual orientation is not immediately measurable on the doorframe yardstick of the local 7/11. It might take a while to dawn on a given person that - of the people who have overtly exhibited their orientation - he could see that's his is different, but it wouldn't be immediately obvious, like height.

*have used default male pronouns. Please forgive. We really need a gender-neutral pronoun.

I agree with the OP, that it must seem natural to them but surely they figure things out in ways other than just having someone point this out to them..

Unless we are dealing with a child, what could be the motivate of such a post in earnestness?

The general neutral pronoun recently being used is "they" but it makes for confusing sentences.

Indeed. That is what school is for. For kids to interact with other kids and learn how to socialize.
Some kids may realize that other boys seem to be attracted to girls (even at the early age of dunking their pigtails in the inkwell), whereas they like the rough-n-tumble of boys.
Some may not see anything different until the potential for dating and sex actually enters the picture. Some may not even realize it then.

In this society of ubiquitous media, I'm certain they understand what sexual orientation is about much younger than previous generations.

I'll wait for the OP to expound.

    Yeah. Too bad it's plural.

But the only way to define, "gay" is with the presence of heterosexuality. It is this presence that defines homosexuality. A little homo growing would hear a definition of homosexuality and think, "that's me" and that's how they discover it. Like Santa, or Superman, DaveC. ☺

Well, you can act gay. It may be different for gay people to exude sexuality.

That's just totally a sex issue and not some social acceptance or something.

    :EDIT:

    If you fuck me...

Nope. That's like saying you are not human until someone tells you that you are. You were always human; you were just using a different word/concept for it.

Like most little boys, I said I didn't like girls. Don't remember how old I was when I realized I did.

But an aversion to girls is not an attraction to boys. A homo will have the word explained to them and realise that's them. But this raises a question about the first homos.

Maybe it only comes up because heterosexuals are jealous.

Liking women and liking to have sex with women are two completely different things.
